We've also seen increased production of 42-inch TVs in recent years, with TV brand LG bringing out 42-inch OLED TVs, like the LG OLED42C2 at the top of this guide. Note that some TVs will require you to manually enable 'HDMI CEC' in your TV settings for the ARC system to work correctly. HDMI Audio Return Channel (HDMI ARC) is a feature that allows soundbars and surround sound systems to use fewer cables. An HDMI cable (version 1.4 or higher) can be connected from your TV’s HDMI ARC port to an HDMI ARC port on a soundbar or surround sound receiver. This is great if you want to take full advantage of the PS5, Xbox Series X, or a beefy PC gaming rig, as it supports 4k @ 120Hz. Sony TVs are also known to have good processing features, and this one is no exception, as the accuracy before calibration is fantastic, and upscaled content looks great.

And OLED is famously less bright than LED TVs in larger sets, but in 42-inch models, they're much more on the same level, so you don't get a real disadvantage there. And don’t be fooled by their small form factor. Many of the best 40, 42 and 43-inch TVs don’t compromise on functionality compared to the best 65-inch TVs or the best 75-inch TVs even – they can give you 4K resolution and HDR (high dynamic range) – for ultra-crisp visuals and bright colors. Plus, just like their bigger siblings, you’ll get the same smart TV interfaces with streaming services built in for all your regular Netflix and Disney Plus binges. The Sony X80K is a lower-end version of the Sony X85K, but it isn't worth getting despite the lower price because it has worse picture quality and doesn't have gaming features.The best 42-inch TV we've tested is the LG OLED42C3PUA. It's a fantastic TV that looks amazing in a dark room but is also capable enough in a brighter environment. It delivers superb picture quality thanks to its near-infinite contrast ratio and has an excellent selection of additional features. Its built-in LG webOS interface has a massive selection of streaming apps, making it a great choice for a dorm or other small space. It's also great for watching movies with good image processing features, like Dolby Vision and DTS advanced video and audio format support.
