A propulsive, lean thriller, which efficiently mounts the tension over its first act before a second act full of surprises and a finale that the whole feature was building towards, Prey is hard to fault, seeming at once completely unlike any previous Predator sequel yet also a strangely natural successor to them (not only the original, but also the nods at the end of the second film, which emphasised that the intergalactic hunters had been 'visiting' Earth for many centuries before Dutch first encountered them). Prey is solid genre fare in its own right, but it also brings the Predator series back on track after getting derailed with the mess of 2018's The Predator.Of course, if you’ve got monitor arms, you can drop that entirely and instead opt for something a little more serious, thanks to the VESA 100x100 support, but otherwise it absolutely looks the part.

Let me say that again; this image has had no digital tampering; it is grainy and dirty, but retains all the finite detail that was scrubbed from the last Blu-ray release and whose image was subsequently used for all releases since (including the 3D). During his commentary, featured on the 4K disc, McTiernan says it was Fox’s notion that “Predator” was a “Rocky meets Alien” storyline.

Not only is the display bright (hitting 458 nits in our testing), but it also performed well (for an IPS monitor) in the contrast test at 1,018:1.If you want the film looking the way it should in HD, get yourself the very first Blu-ray release of this film from back in 2008. Sadly there are no new extras, but everything from the Hunter Edition is replicated here on the included Blu-ray, which is the same DNRed monster previously available.
