About this deal

He may seem like an ordinary eleven-year-old boy, but he's actually more than a thousand years old--and remembers the last Viking invasion of England, not to mention the French Revolution and both World Wars. Rich and strange (and kitted out with an eye-catching cover), but stronger in the set pieces than the internal logic. Alfie, our title character, isn't terribly interesting or crafty, either, and acts strangely naive for a guy who has seen 10 centuries. His predicament is unusual, gripping and moving and certainly made me think about what it is that makes a fulfilling, worthwhile life. All in all, Ross Welford’s The 1,000-Year-Old Boysits on the threshold of fantasy and historical fiction with the human condition as its overarching theme.

The 1,000-year-old Boy by Ross Welford | Waterstones

He must learn to trust again if he is to find the last life-pearl before Aidan’s uncle Jasper (who turns out to be another Neverdead masquerading as an eccentric man who reckons himself a sailor) beats him to it. Life being short isn't something to celebrate, you can dress it up all you like, but old age and dying are horrible aspects of life which we could all do without. She is a wonderfully crafted character – a gutsy, smart, free-spirited and courageous girl who brings out the best of those around her. A heartstopping, poignant, epic adventure story about a boy destined to live forever, who only wants to grow up.You could also use the opening scenes from Disney-Pixar’s ‘Up’ to look at writing flashbacks, the passage of time and similar themes of loss and ageing. I would recommend this book to fans of Piers Torday and Katherine Rundell, and to those who have fantasised about living forever — Alfie Monk will gladly tell you why it is not all it is cracked up to be. I can't wait to sit down and review fully, but to keep it brief I was entranced by this wonderful, emotional story and adored little Alve. Of course it isn't a witch, it's a woman whose given up on society and gotten sick of hiding from authorities and changing her identity.

The 1000 Year Old Boy by Ross Welford Book Review: The 1000 Year Old Boy by Ross Welford

Rather than being some miracle to be aspired to, Tom Hazard, like Alfie Monk in Welford’s book, finds it lonely and isolating because it prohibits normal human relationships. As you may know, I set up a Facebook Reading Challenge at the start of the year, with a different theme for each month. The data collected including the number visitors, the source where they have come from, and the pages visted in an anonymous form.
