Follow path 300m up to a ruined mine manager’s house, then continue up the old railway, to reach a ruined watermill and factor. The highest beach in the UK at 355 metres above sea level, it has been run by a group of local volunteers since they rescued it from closure back in 2001. It all started with two young children and a dog, whom have just moved to a new house, which lead to the uncovering of a mysterious lake that has never been discovered before. We were tired and very hot so we were more than ready for a swim (it was over 40 degrees Celsius and humid).

This is a reservoir nestled between Pumlumon Fawr and Pumlumon Fach - with the former being the highest peak in the Cambrian mountains. We got a 2 bedroom with a king bed in one room and 2 twin beds in the other bedroom across the hall and it has it's own bathroom as well. It had been a very hot dry summer so perhaps the swimming would be better other years – but I don’t think so.

A deep blue lake set under a 100m sheer crag (Cloggy), this place is famous in climbing circles and in traditional folklore. High and exposed, the reservoir is often wild and windy, sometimes tranquil, and occasionally a baking sun trap. The story is followed by eight pages of photos and fun facts about foxes and hedgehogs, including how we can all help protect hedgehogs who may come into our gardens to find food.
