About this deal

The studs that the clips push on to are threaded and the purpose of the two holes in the clips are to be able to use a tool like needle-nosed pliers to be able to uncrew them if you ever need to take them off. That link did not work for me, but, I'd give normal thickness washers a miss, as I said you need a piece of thin sheet tin etc, like a piece cut from a tin of peas/beans etc, originally the hole through the heat shield will be just a bit bigger in diameter than the stud, it will always end up expanding and still being circular due to the shape of the steel retainer below it, I've been there done that on a couple of cars and I'd doubt that your car will be much different, that is always going to happen with time and moisture. It looks like the aluminium they use now is super thin and brittle, my 20 year old corrado has its original ally heat shields and clips, all still perfect. rgb251, 251, 253;">I managed to get it firmly back on, it will probably hold, without any more rattle.

So if you have a similar rattle and it's not the bands or the exhaust shield somewhere, you might have a bigger problem like I had. The excess heat from your downpipe could cause problems with your engine fan motors which will lead to bigger problems.

When used to retain the side plastic undercovers, rust does eventually kill them and they let the undercover droop if your lucky, if not, I've heard that when too many fail due to rusting, the undercovers drop down onto the road, but you would need to be very short of checking things over to end up in that situation - a friend's daughter did lose one from her old Polo, so much for "garage of dad" ! As for fitment, I guess they just push over the screw stud that is peeping out the heat shield, and has lots of rust on its surface? I've bought the smaller thicker ones recently but that was only to fit one in a position that VW did not find the need to, the springy/flexible larger ones I've used for years on my older cars, nowadays these are only used to secure heat shields, their use in lower temperature locations has now been stopped and plastic nuts have replaced them in newer cars. The rattling could adlo be comming from your intake tube where the forward section connects with your intake box. When it comes to fitting them, I use a 10mm deep socket and a rubber mallet to tap them onto the threaded stud, then use a set of long nose pliers in the circular holes to twist the clip clockwise for some extra tightness. Here's some pictures since I rely so much on the pictures people post on here for other various fixes/projects. Annoying knocking coming from the rear for a few weeks now, crawled under the rear and found a couple of these have corroded and fallen off making the sheild loose, could that really be the cause of the knocking, that simple ? As long as it’s at the rear of the car and not near the front, then ditching it in the main won’t cause you any problems, the biggest problem you get is the front ones that protect cv joints or steering uj’s as they then tend to fail prematurely.

You'll see some generic circular spring clips that I've used to refix (for the second time) my new rear heat shield. All the cars i’ve owned the heat shields have never used conventional nuts, they’ve always been some form of clip.
