About this deal

John Howe Lord of the Rings, as well as the talent of Alan Lee, collaborated to produce exceptional Lord of the Rings concept art that was published by Gary Russel. kept changing as Tolkien revisited and revised the text, as shown by the sketches he made (and discarded) reproduced in this book. Even when the final drawing is achieved and is unquestionably fantastic in concept, he did not hesitate to put it aside if it didn’t work with the story he had developed so far.

Some of them were brought from Middle-earth by the Valar to Valinor and were subsequently taught by the Ainur.Only a few of these were meant for publication; most were aids to help Tolkien conceive his complex story and keep it consistent.

Tolkien’s various creative writing and design moments, better grasping the amount of detail, reflection, and expression put into the conception of his complex epic fantasy world. The Lord of the Rings art depicts the ENTS as Tolkien described them in his writings as trees with between three and seven rootlike toes and very deep dark eyes and also grow to be several meters tall. While Alan Lee and John Howe are the most prominent artists associated with the Lord of the Rings concept art, there are other talented artists who have also contributed to the visual world of Middle-earth. They were twice the size of the elves and demons with claws and whips with notable members being Lungorthin and Gothmog. This book is mostly filled with sketches - some very rudimentary - that Tolkien drew to help flesh out his ideas. It’s interesting to see how often his publisher would request something from him, and he would first respond, “No no, I have neither time nor inclination to work on that right now”; but then you can see how the idea worked into his mind, and he would send another response, saying, “Ok, I think this should be done, and I will see what I can do by a certain date, but no promises. R.R Tolkien -- from its mythical creatures to its majestic landscapes -- and make a great addition to any fan's home or office.

He said he got "a real spark" from the Hildebrandt calendars, which showed him that the books could be illustrated. I applaud Wayne Hammond and Christine Scull for their excellent work on another volume that offers much exploration and study.

Also, because my favorite boxed set of LOTR features the dustjackets Tolkien designed, I loved seeing the thought that went into those designs—much more care than I would have imagined! There was always a higher standard, a more perfect realization of his idea, just out of his reach, and his creative process moved not in a smooth line toward that, but in fits and starts, periods of intense, productive work, and frustrating periods of no work at all. More than 180 images are included, all of them printed in colour from high-quality scans and photographs. Howe's school years were complicated by moves which took place with a timing that left the art classes full, and left him in classes like power mechanics. However, it’s important to remember that concept art is just the starting point, and adjustments are often made during the production process.
