About this deal

How often would you suggest retreating - I am quite careful and make sure that all water is wiped off as much as possible.

While epoxy finishes, such as used in marine applications, are absolutely waterproof common interior varnish is actually surprisingly water-resistant. This is a service that we offer when you purchase your worktop from us, which is available as part of our wood worktop cutting service. We're having a solid wood worktop so we got a sink with a drainer as otherwise the water will damage the wood. Otherwise, I'd just go with a regular hardwood (like maple) and coat it with mineral oil or salad bowl finish. The two elements can be used separately – to cater for double the capacity – or together – for an all-in-one drainage unit. The ones I saw with boards glued up did not alternate the grain (right side up, then upside down, etc. What’s more, the drip tray underneath can be removed and rotated 90° so that you can orientate the angled drainer to suit your kitchen sink.

I went ahead and purchased a TREND Drain Board jig, to be able to give the interior of the board a slight drain downwards (5 degrees? If you would like to change your settings or withdraw consent at any time, the link to do so is in our privacy policy accessible from our home page. This white rack uses soft-tipped pegs to support your dishes in any direction, and has a cutlery holder that can be removed for easy cleaning. The radius is usually the problem because as you're making the turn, you're unknowingly bending the blade. New sink is coming into new kitchen next week - living the dream with a double butler sink and no draining board. Once applied the water will normally stay on top of the finish, if that doesn't happen any more you will know it's time for a maintenance layer. This ceramic angled drainer is designed to sit directly on any work surface, though is particularly well-suited for protecting a wooden worktop.

I decided that with the lack-luster results I'd had with the factory Kohler cutting boards, a new method needed to be introduced or at least investigated. If you decide to go with raw linseed, get GOOD quality stuff, not the cheapest, and warm it up to 60 deg C, brush it on and keep it warm with a heat gun (don't overheat) it will penetrate more. None of these cutting boards have been put into the dishwasher and none have been subjected to excessive exposure to water. If we'd splashed out on the ceramic worktop I had my eye on, we'd have gone with undermounted with draining grooves cut into the worktop. Also I am thinking abhout routing out a 1x1" groove at the back/bottom edge of the board, then epoxy in a piece of 1x1" walnut, but on edge (90 degrees to the grain on the board) hoping that this helps with cupping, sort of like CAULS.The wood cutting boards we have are endgrain but when I clean them off after each use I clean both sides so the water exposure is equal. I have noticed that the surface has started to feel a bit sticky - so it looks like it is time to freshen it up. I am also going to put a horizontal 1"x1" piece on the bottom of the front of the board, that will hold the drainboard in place as it is on the edge of the countertop/sink. I don't think you need any particular angle, sloped is probably enough :-) But we can use the shedding angle for flat roofs as a guide, go for 1/4" over 12" (6mm over 300mm) as the absolute minimum and anything great than that is obviously beneficial.

There's a lot of work and time involved in some of these boards, make sure you aren't building a trap for all of the little bacteria from your foods.

And in spite of this water still goes everywhere and has started to go into and warp the door on the base unit under the sink. I suggest you do laminate the boards and try to orient the grain to minimize expansion/contraction issues. Wood is surprisingly durable in solid form and even untreated softwoods should give you years of service, although of course you should expect staining.
