Google didn't disclose the Pixel 6’s modem at its launch event, nor when we asked for additional details about it. After some research with Sascha Segan, PCMag's lead mobile analyst, we're confident the phone uses Samsung's Exynos 5123 modem. The Google Pixel 6 was unveiled on October 19, 2021 alongside the Google Pixel 6 Pro, and each of these smartphones were released on October 25. The Google Pixel 6’s specs were another great mystery: just how good would the Google-designed Tensor chipset be? While benchmarks don’t see the phone outperforming any leading flagships to any great extent, the phone does have enough power to run smoothly and take great photos.

Whether that matters is another question: like the Samsung phones mentioned above, the Pixel 6 breezes through browsing, watching media, and other tasks, without a hitch. Those scores are also notably higher than that of the Google Pixel 5, which, with its Snapdragon 765G chipset, got a Geekbench 5 score of 1600. One notable software development here is called Real Tone, which is a default element of the camera, and which Google says enables the cameras to capture more natural-looking skin tones in photos of people of color. Google has worked with a number of photographers to find ways of rendering darker skin tones more accurately. Google's new Calling Assistance features for 1-800 numbers—which includes a hold time estimate called Wait Time, and another feature called Direct My Call, which displays automated prompts on the display—were hit or miss. We tested the features with nearly a dozen different companies and it worked about two-thirds of the time. Two Cameras, Many Possibilities The camera bar has a 50MP primary sensor and a 12MP ultrawide lens The Pixel 6’s new “Face Unblur” feature also works tremendously well. When it detects a face in the frame while shooting in portrait mode, the ultrawide camera captures an image with a faster shutter speed than the primary lens as soon as you press the button. The Pixel 6 then combines the two pictures in an effort to reduce blur on a moving subject. Here’s the final image after telling my fiancée to spin around for a bit.The most important thing to note is that the Pixel 6 is the very first handset to be powered by Google’s in-house Tensor chipset. Ditching Qualcomm and avoiding Exynos and Kirin, Tensor promises a handful of performance and efficiency improvements over last year’s mid-range Snapdragon 765G, and it represents a bold new future for Google. The haptics or vibrations that recreate a sense of touch for buttons and other interactions are really sharp and good compared with most Android competitors.

Google does include a silicon Pixel 6 case in the box, with additional bumpers above and below the camera gap, to ensure the glass doesn’t scratch against the surface on which you place the phone. We don’t feel particularly confident that it would survive a drop that directly impacted the phone’s rear, however; nor we aren’t sure if the glass on the rear is of the Gorilla Glass Victus protecting the front. The Pixel 6 Pro is 5G-ready, so you’ll be able to connect to next-gen networks with this smartphone, coverage and your plan permitting. Things are a little complicated if you live in the US, but around the rest of the world any version of the Pixel 6 Pro will be ready to go straight away.

The Future (Or Google’s Idea of It) 

Overall, the Google Pixel 6 isn’t as curved as the Pixel 4 and Pixel 5-series phones, with its more straight edges and less-rounded corners resulting in a look that’s not wholly dissimilar to the Sony Xperia 1 III. It does feel a bit wider, though, which may lead users to fumble it when handling the phone; it isn’t really suited for one-handed use. The Google Pixel 6 represents quite a departure from recent Pixel phone launches. Not only is it unashamedly premium in its design, but it costs the same amount as the Pixel 5 did at launch, is significantly faster and comes with improved cameras and a revamped UI. We can at least be relieved that Google likely won’t repeat the mistake of hobbling its new phones with inadequate battery life. The Google Pixel 6 has a 4,614mAh capacity, up from the 4,080mAh of 2020’s Pixel 5, and far above the measly 2,800mAh in the Pixel 4. At 6.2 by 2.9 by 0.3 inches (HWD) and 7.3 ounces, the Pixel 6 is more manageable than the bigger Pro model (6.5 by 3.0 by 0.4 inches, 7.4 ounces). You can wrap your hand around the phone and its buttons are easy to reach. We’ll start by talking about the camera tech, but the software here is another highlight, and something you won’t experience on any other current phones – although we might see Google roll some of these features out to older Pixel phones, while we might see other brands imitate them on future devices.

Besides, the Google Pixel 6 256 GB 8 GB runs Android v12 operating system and houses a decent 4614 mAh battery that lets you use it for hours on end while watching movies, listening to songs, playing games and doing other stuff without worrying about charging it frequently.. How about that Magic Eraser tool? In a word, it’s magic. If a stranger, overhead cable or lamppost is photobombing what would otherwise be an Insta-worthy picture, all you’ve got to do is edit the image, select Magic Eraser in the Tools section and draw an outline with your finger around what you want removed. The Pixel 6 then takes care of the rest in a couple of seconds. Both cameras are capable of best-in-class photos. Our daylight test shots show fine detail with excellent depth of field, for the most part, but a few shots look slightly soft. Our biggest complaint is that our photos look washed out. And while Google has always been known for its natural-looking color science, photos with the Pixel 6 seem a little warm and undersaturated. That said, you can easily tweak your shots in Google Photos. There's some minor loss of fine detail with the ultrawide lens, but no noticeable distortion There’s glass at the front and rear, which is quite a departure from the recent plastic-bodied Pixel phones, and both panels are constructed from Corning’s toughest phone glass yet: Gorilla Glass Victus. There’s also IP68 dust and water resistance, as well as an optical under-screen fingerprint reader in a change from the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor of recent Pixels. There’s no optical zoom available here then, as there is on the Pro model, but the Pixel 6’s ‘Super Res Zoom’ does deliver a 7x digital zoom.The Pixel 6 supports fast charging up to 30W – and while a USB-C to USB-C cable is included in the box, there’s no plug adapter. It appears Google has joined other phone makers in the war on e-waste, so you’ll need to source one yourself.
