Cutting and polishing pastes are typically used to revive paint which has gone flat after being exposed to the sun or which has been aged with tiny scratches caused by washing, grit and general wear and tear. They can also be used to blend in new paint by matching the textures, or remove minor scrape damage from roadside thorns or careless parking. To see which is the best, we subjected seven cutting pastes to a series of trials, applying them by both hand and using a dual rotary polisher machine fitted with a fresh medium foam cutting pad. It’s also important to point out that deep scratches and paint chips that penetrate through the clear coat and into the colour coat or primer can’t be fixed with cutting compound. CUT-IT is a high quality metal lubricant and cutting paste suitable for reaming, tapping, drilling and metal forming and is suitable for all metals. If you want to apply the cutting compound to restore paint shine and remove oxidisation, the job is much bigger. It’s best to use a buffing machine rather than applying by hand for large areas. You should also work in sections from the top down, completing each section before moving on. If you can’t quite stretch that far and only need to remove a few light marks from undergrowth, the Simoniz is great value and smells nicer than T-Cut. Rubbing compound can be applied by hand with a cloth or circular applicator pad, or with a polishing machine using a wool pad.

Car polishing compound is similar to cutting compound but much less abrasive. It removes the top layers of wax and build-up to restore a glossy shine to the paint. It doesn’t remove layers of paint. Both cutting fluids and pastes will have a lubricating effect. However their performance will depend on the quality of their ingredients. In particular the addition of superior extreme pressure or anti wear additives will greatly influence the effectiveness of either option.
