This is an adventurer’s tent and it’s designed to suit all the elements one might face. As mentioned, it is wind responsive and sturdy, even in storms. It is waterproof and can withstand a significant beating without letting much, if any, water through. Wet Weather Performance The Cobra features a door on both sides of the tent allowing ease of access to enter or exit the tent! In addition, this means you also get a porch area on both sides providing extra storage space of your camping gear. Entrance: don't really like- 2 entrances was fine but I found it a bit awkward to get into, sort of low and at a bit of an angle and having to wiggle through the porch section- maybe I'm getting old but I'd look for a different design in future.

The double side entries are very useful - we tend to use one porch as a store and one as a doorway. Having both sides with zip entries on the 3 person version is best. The 2 person version only has one zipped side, which is a bit of a pain. However, as a tall man, I appreciate the way this tent design makes full use of its length. One thing to note about the aluminium poles on the Cobra: they need to bend a bit more than feels comfortable. A few times, I swore I was going to bust the poles trying to make them fit. This means to fully stretch out the tent and to make the most of its waterproofing and wind-resistant abilities, it needs to be pitched on a spacious area of land. I like the ability to enter from both sides and the extra storage at the side of the door on both sides (leave the smelly shoes out there) Only when the tent began to reach +6 weeks of full-on wilderness use did the floor begin to lose some of its waterproofing ability. Bearing in mind that I never use a groundsheet, this is pretty good going. Bring this review up to the present, the canvas of the tent is still as waterproof as ever and not one tent peg has been bent or guy rope broken. Erecting: given the condensation issue I was never able to leave it all attached together so putting it up was a bit of a faff compared to other lightweight tents. I also concluded I prefer a semi or fully self standing design. To further test its endurance, one month later, I took it to the Pembrokeshire Coast in Wales, UK. I was walking the 186-mile coast path over a period of 2 weeks. The weather was unusually sunny for September and I wondered how it would fare against heat and salt winds. Yet again, it surpassed my expectations. In terms of weight, something a touch lighter would have been great for a hike of this length, but when considering its price point and comfort rating over those 2 weeks, I can hardly complain. Double Skin Tent – A tent with an inner bedroom and a flysheet, most family tents are designed as a “Double Skin tent”, as it makes the tent more comfortable, and lessens the effects of condensation. The Cobra 2 is shaped like a structured wedge which provides good resistance when pitched head-on into the prevailing wind. It is squat and can be pitched close to the ground reducing the effect of adverse weather conditions. One key area we examine is a tent's ability to repel water. A fabric's waterproof properties are measured using a rating called hydrostatic head. If a tent has a hydrostatic head of 3000mm it means that a 3 metre column of water can be placed on its surface before any drops will show through the underside of the fabric. The 2 poles used to pitch the canvas are aluminium 7001-T6, which is a light and sturdy material. The larger pole runs across the apex of the tent and is fed through a pouch on top. The smaller pole runs across the width of the footwell and is also fed through an outer pouch. Once the poles are inserted, clips attached to the fly can be hooked onto the poles to stretch out the canvas and provide more tension. If you keep the groundsheet low to the floor, this tent can be pitched in challenging conditions. In good weather, it can be erected in under 5 minutes. In high winds, a bit more care may be needed but it’s still perfectly possible to do alone. Hydrostatic Head (Tents) – a waterproof rating for technical fabrics measured in mm. The higher the rating the more waterproof the fabric is. A rating of 1500mm is deemed waterproof, but on a tent, look for a rating of 3000 or higher. Measured by the height of water column a fabric weave can take before it begins to “sweat”. “Polycotton” tents will not have a Hydrostatic Head level, as they are not treated for waterproofing. The stated weight on the Cobra is 2.05 kg, but when I weighed mine it came in at closer to 2.2 kg. Definitely within the margin of error that I’ve come to expect with tent weights. It can be used in frosty and even snowy conditions, gathered the user has all appropriate cold-weather gear such as a down sleeping bag, insulated sleeping mat, foil ground layer, hat, gloves, and thermals. But the tent shouldn’t be relied upon in isolation to keep you warm during a night’s camping in sub-zero temperatures.
