About this deal

I abandoned The Handmaid’s Tale when I was in my early 20s. Couldn’t get into it, sorry. I returned to it ahead of the TV version and I’m so glad I did. Margaret Atwood’s best idea, if not her best novel. Controversially, I prefer Oryx and Crake. Perhaps my favourite novel of all time. Juno Dawson is at the top of her game in this vibrant and meticulous take on witchcraft. Her characteristic wit and grit shine through’ Samantha Shannon

But what they don’t know is that they’re not talking to Niamh. Niamh is dead after something has woken up her comatose twin, Ciara – and Ciara has taken over Niamh’s life. And she’ll do whatever it takes to live. And Leonie is trying to hunt down an old adversary, Dabney Hale, following his footsteps across Europe. Meanwhile, Elle learns that her husband’s been cheating on her. Oh, and Luke, Niamh’s boyfriend is a witch hunter. Life in and around HMRC is pretty damn complicated. Dark Matter by Michelle Paver is terrifying. The only novel to really get under my skin and infiltrate my nightmares. The characters that were so carefully and diligently created in the first book are given their own stories in the second book, and it is a blast to read." — Booklist (starred review)

And then there’s the small matter of Dabney Hale: freshly escaped from Grierlings prison, he’s on the hunt for a mythical object that will give him unimaginable power. Leonie’s brother is on the trail, but doesn’t know the danger he now faces, and so she sets off to bring him home and bring Hale to justice. The brilliant and fast-paced second contemporary political fantasy in Dawson's HMRC trilogy...Magic seamlessly weaves with pop culture references, fun soap-operatic twists, and an incisive look at the psychology of violent misogyny. I truly think the first novel in Suzanne Collins’s Hunger Games series is a perfect book. I’ve read it about four times. Is it original? No, not especially, but what’s not to love? It riffs on Greek mythology; it’s a satire of reality TV; it tears along at a ferocious pace, and made me sob like a baby. Now I want to read it again. Juno Dawson is a bestselling novelist, screenwriter, journalist, and a columnist for Attitude magazine. The characters that were so carefully and diligently created in the first book are given their own stories in the second book, and it is a blast to read...The complexities of modern life are here; thrown into the mix are magic, witches, and rules created around them...There are no limits in this fantasy world; even the established rules are pushed. Readers who enjoy feminist, queer fantasy like The Priory of the Orange Tree (2019), by Samantha Shannon, will enjoy this series." — Booklist, starred review
