About this deal

We headed right and followed the path around the edge, then took a detour off to find The Edge trig point. This is over the fence, so we found a stile and hopped over before heading to the trig point, or should I say trig pointS! There are actually 2 trig points here, with the old one being dumped on the ground next to the newer one. I’m not sure if there is anywhere else where you can touch 2 trig points at once! Dogs have been used in wars for centuries, but it was a man named E. H. Richardson who convinced the British Army to begin the mass training of dogs in the lead up to the First World War. Over 53,000 dogs served for both the Allies and the Central Powers during World War One. Of these, a near 20,000 served for the British Army at the frontline. The date is May 16, 1952. It’s nighttime. The place is somewhere in Korea. Leading the American squad of 16 men is Lt. Peter Jourdonnias. Opposing them, somewhere out in the darkness, is an unknown number of Chinese soldiers. Both sides are drawn together in a brutal war that will bring these combatants together… or perhaps not.

Yet it was not uncommon. The only scout dog team involved during the Korean conflict, the 26 th ISDP took part in more than 1,500 combat patrols during the course of the war and just about everyone was conducted at night. I suppose it depends on your perspective. But the Chinese obviously did respect them. When front lines stagnated, the Chinese sometimes would set up loudspeakers and pierce the quiet night with propaganda announcements aimed at American troops. On one occasion, which is documented in military records, they bellowed, “Yankee – Take your dog and go home!” Lots of dog breeds were used during World War One, but the most popular type of dogs were medium-sized, intelligent and trainable breeds. Two in particular were used because of their superior strength, agility, territorial nature and trainability; Doberman Pinscher’s and GSDs, both native to Germany. Doberman’s were used because they are both highly intelligent and easily trainable, and possess excellent guarding abilities. Being of slight frame and extremely agile, their dark coat allowed them to slip undetected through terrain without alerting the enemy. They were employed most frequently in Germany. German Shepherd’s were used also because of their strength, intelligence and trainability, being eager to please their masters. Other breeds associated with WWI were smaller breeds such as terriers, who were most often employed as ‘ratters’; dogs trained to hunt and kill rats in the trenches.

He also has a tattoo of Tom Jones with the title "Sex Bom", however, this could be a result of him nearing death and hallucinating. Casualty or ‘Mercy’ dogs were vital in World War One. Originally trained in the late 1800’s by the Germans, they were later utilised across Europe. Known as ‘Sanitatshunde’ in Germany, these dogs were trained to find the wounded and dying on battlefields and were equipped with medical supplies to aid those suffering. Those soldiers who could help themselves to supplies would tend to their own wounds, whilst other more gravely wounded soldiers would seek the company of a Mercy dog to wait with them whilst they died. The Komoot route deviates off the path to get a better view of the waterfall, which I would only recommend doing in good weather. Soldiers hated rats as they were smelly and spread diseases . They tried to get rid of them using clubs, bayonets and even guns. Sentry dogs were trained to work with one specific guard, and would join them in a patrol on a short lead. These dogs were often trained to deliver a warning signal such as a grow or bark when they believed an unknown or unwelcome person was present in a specified area. Dobermans were commonly placed in this role.

Did Arlo save the platoon? Who knows what might have happened had the dog not alerted the patrol. What is certain is that canine units save lives on the battlefield. They are masters of detecting the enemy. Keep collections to yourself or inspire other shoppers!
