About this deal

With the flash turned off, the Olympus TG-4 doesn't show any obvious signs of vignetting at wide-angle or full zoom. However, it does occur when the flash is on. Certainly at wide-angle, at least. It's less so at full zoom, but on a plain white wall, it's still noticeable. Here’s where the TOUGH TG4 really shines. Its maximum aperture at the wide angle setting is a very bright f2, closing to f4.9 when fully zoomed in. By comparison the TOUGH TG-860 manages f3.5-5.7 and the COOLPIX AW130 f2.8-4.9. To put that in context, if you were shooting with the TOUGH TG4 and COOLPIX AW130 at the wide angle setting in the same conditions, you’d be able to shoot at 400 ISO on the TG4 where you’d need 800 ISO on the AW130, or over 1000 ISO on the TG860. This mode enables you to shoot in the appropriate settings by selecting a sub mode best suited to the subject or scene. The camera arrives boxed with a very basic manual which tells us how to insert the battery and take care of and clean the camera, plus separate set up CD with the full manual on it – which isn’t much use for those of us with a latest generation iMac, omitting any optical drive. As noted earlier we don’t get a standalone charger either, which is fairly typical with lower priced cameras these days – so, unless you invest in a spare, the camera is tied up when you want to replenish a spent battery. Power lasts for around 300 shots from a full charge. I like many TG-4 features, but deal-breaking for me is the too-heavy noise reduction. I use images for science, often viewed at 100%; color patches inserted by noise reduction makes it hard to tell what is real vs created by the camera.FullHD video is recorded with stereo sound at 30fps, with optical zoom and image stabilisation. The camera has a number of high-speed video modes, recording at 240 or 120fps, although at a reduced resolution. The other important lens specification is the focal ratio, or to put it another way the maximum aperture that the lens diaphragm can be opened to. This is important on any camera as it determines the quality of shots in low light, or indeed whether you’re able to shoot at all. It’s even more important when shooting under water where the ambient light level is always lower than it is above the surface. With a total of 16.8 megapixels, the Olympus Stylus Tough TG-4 has five still image resolution options, 4608 x 3456, 3264 x 2448, 2048 x 1536, 640 x 480 pixels respectively. The camera has an effective image stabilizer system that ensures clear and stable images in low light conditions and while moving.

My experience with the two TGs I've had is that Olympus has a great warranty service and that three months seems to be the life expectancy of the so-called 'Tough'. True, my sample is only two. I have TG2 which is 12MP while TG3/4 is 16MP. This is the reason I did not upgrade to TG4 - too many MP.From the front, the TG-4 looks seriously contemporary and muscular. It’s all hard edges and is almost industrial in its design. Despite the bog standard image sensor, there is no mistaking that this is a viable alternative than your smartphone or iPad for taking snaps at the beach or on the ski slopes. In other words, and this is important, it actually has a reason to exist independently. On paper, the TG-4's lens - which is shared by the Pentax WG-4 and WG-5 - is the best in its class. At its 25mm wide end, the maximum aperture is F2.0, which makes it great for low light and underwater photography. The lens becomes a lot more conventional at the telephoto end, where the aperture is a F4.9. A sensor-shift image stabilization system helps reduce the effects of camera shake, and seemed to be effective in the time we spent with the camera. The Olympus Tough TG-4 is a weatherised digital compact camera announced by Olympus Corporation on April 13, 2015. It differs from its predecessor, the Olympus Tough TG-3, by including raw image recording. because most people who use action cameras don't want to bother controling adjustments in the camera. Many times they don't not even use the camera in the hands. Besides, in the case of action cameras, not only the sensor is small.. They also use ultra-wide lenses.. So, everything is always in focus. Auto: Sequential numbers for folder names and file names can even be continued when replacing cards.

I have TG2 and the one before that (which is not TG), they all have fogging up problem while from high to (very) low temperature. GPS data along with barometric pressure, altitude, and a compass can be displayed even with the camera is turned off. Some art filters have altered versions of the original art filter. (e.g. Pin Hole II, Pin Hole III) Color Filter and Monochrome Color options are available with some art filters. The camera automatically adjusts the settings best suited for the scene. Camera menu settings such as white balance and exposure compensation can be changed. iAUTO, P (Program), A (Aperture Priority), S (Shutter Priority), M (Manual), Photo Story, SCN (Scene Select), ART (Art Filter), Movie Please, Olympus, fix up your in-camera JPEG rendering software. Or at least provide an option for the owner to turn down the noise reduction. New to the latest version of the app is the ability to configure a basic interval timer or trigger a short movie recording of up to 16 seconds. The interval timer is more like an advanced self-timer, taking no more than ten shots at intervals no greater than 3 seconds, but it’s still a handy update, and you can also configure it to capture bursts (for burst shooting the maximum interval is 30 seconds) or movies instead if preferred. If you choose to record movies remotely with the camera, sadly, you can’t touch the screen to reposition the AF area or pull-focus. ISO 1600 prints at 5 x 7 inches just pass our seal of approval, retaining full color and exhibiting low noise. Similar to ISO 800, contrast detail is now lost in our red-leaf swatch of fabric, but the rest of the print remains reasonably sharp.

The "tiny pixels" are not destroying IQ. A 16MP shot downsized to 12MP in postprocessing will have more detail and less noise than a native 12MP shot from the same-sized sensor. Like the earlier TOUGH TG3, the TG4 has built-in GPS and Wifi, allowing you to tag your photos with positional information, wirelessly transfer them to your phone and upload them to the Web and remotely control the camera with a smartphone. There’s also an electronic compass feature and a manometer which measures barometric pressure providing altitude and depth information. Before we move on to look at the quality results, there’s one final feature of the Olympus TOUGH TG4 that you won’t find on the other rugged water-proof compacts I’ve tested and that’s the ability to shoot camera RAW files. Choose 16M +RAW from the quality settings menu and you’ll get a RAW file in the Olympus .ORF format as well as a full resolution JPEG. So the 4x zoom on the TOUGH TG4 is average for a water-proof compact. Its sibling the TOUGH TG-860 is a little out of the ordinary with a 5x zoom that starts at a super-wide 21mm and extends to 105mm, while the Nikon COOLPIX AW130 also has a 5x zoom ranging from 24-120mm.
