Listen, you don’t know how much this means to me,” Belle began as the officer stepped toward her. He wanted her to hang up the phone. But she needed to say this before she ended the call. “I thought I understood what happened three years ago, but I never asked you—” Riverdale meets Kara Thomas’s The Cheerleaders in this electrifying, twisted thriller about estranged friends who reunite when someone commits the murder they’d planned—but didn’t go through with—and leaves one of their own to take the fall.

Hello?” That familiar voice came on the line and Belle’s hands started to shake. Tears filled her eyes. I… How much should she say? These conversations were probably recorded. But even if they were, they couldn’t be used in a court of law without her permission. Right? You had to agree to be recorded or it was inadmissible. She knew this, because three years earlier, she’d studied her rights. She’d prepared to be arrested after she put her plan into action. But the night before the murder, someone had gotten cold feet. Also the ending? Wtf was that lmao. There’s predictable and haha I suspected you then there’s whatever that was. I was expecting this story to be much like the many other murder mystery books I've read, with contemporary characters and high school secrets. So I was pleasantly surprised to find this this is actually a dark, gothic story about two boys, two girls, obsession and family secrets. Killing her would’ve been easy. All summer, we made flower garlands. All summer, petals were strewn across her kitchen table, where she drank her tea. If we dropped a petal of belladonna, a petal of poppy, and a petal of lily into that cup, we’d never really know which one of us killed her. From the author of bestselling THIS LIE WILL KILL YOU comes another unputdownable thriller about a group of friends who will do anything to protect each other – e ven murder . . . Poppy, Lily and Belladonna grew up cherishing imagined fairytales, though their fantasies begin to break apart when they discover their best friend Raven being abused by his stepmother. They’d do anything to help him, and end up planning to murder his stepmom by steeping a flower from each of their names into her tea—belladonna being fatal. The plan is called off last minute, but years later after the four have drifted apart, Raven’s stepmom is found dead next to a note detailing the ‘perfect recipe for murder’ from when they were kids. The strange thing is that only belladonna was found in her drink, and so only Belladonna gets taken to jail. The sudden rekindling of their past forces Poppy, Lily and Raven to uncover what really happened, and who could have framed Belladonna for murder. I didn’t. I swear. But Edwin was passed out in his bedroom all night, and no one can account for me.” Then let’s hope you have an alibi,” he said, gesturing to the gaggle of officers standing by the door. They were going to wake her father, but he couldn’t account for her. He’d been snoring in his bedroom for hours. There was only one person in the world who could account for Belle’s whereabouts that night, and that person was long gone by now.

Who you gonna call?” the man asked, in this jovial tone that made her think he was going to start humming the Ghostbusters theme song. Everything about this was absurd. Belle wanted to tell herself it was a dream, because none of this could be happening, except . . . the rest of the night had been incredibly vivid. Those lips, trailing across her skin. Those hands, warm and familiar. Bright eyes. Mischievous smile. They’d hardly touched over the past few years, and yet, everything was exactly the way it had been the first time they’d held hands. The neighbors might’ve noticed me sneaking out around two thirty. She flashed a taunting smile. If you’re good at what you do, I’m sure you can drum up some evidence. Sometimes their unreliability is by omission-- hiding information from readers, from each other, and more critically, from themselves. They never once think about or mention key reveals when it is natural for that particular character in that particular train of thought or situation to be thinking about that particular reveal. I don't consider this clever narration, rather deliberate authorial manipulation.

You were never here,” Belle broke in, tossing a pile of clothes onto the bed. “You haven’t set foot in my bedroom in years. All right?” The detective frowned, eyeing the thin slashes that laced their way up her arm. Why didn’t you tell me this before? he asked. One of Us is Lying meets This Lie Will Kill You but with a chilling supernatural twist that will keep you guessing until the very end . . .

Everybody knows that in the death of a spouse, the first place to look is at the current husband/wife, any existing lovers, and previous exes. The fact that the police did neither in both cases and went for the immediate arrest of a teenage girl based on a conveniently placed "murder recipe" left at the scene of the crime . . . I mean, you don't get more gullible than that. The story follows 4 childhood friends: Poppy, Lily, Belladonna and Raven. But while they all felt like they were the best of friends, it turns out there were secrets upon secrets that only carried over into their present day lives. And when Raven's stepmother ends up dead, a long ago murder pact shines an unfortunate light on the group. It’s, um… it’s me,” she managed, dashing away the tears with her free hand. “Please don’t hang up.” Let’s start at the beginning, he said, sliding into his seat. He was wearing a blue blazer and jeans, but she could see his gun poking out beneath the blazer’s hem. Where were you between the hours of eleven p.m. Saturday night and one a.m. this morning? Overall, this was a solid murder-mystery that points out the importance of standing up for what you believe and making a family and future of your own.Our story opens with a body, that of Raven’s stepmother, being found. She has been poisoned with leaves of belladonna placed in her tea. There’s a recipe, written in fourteen year old Bella’s handwriting, on the table next to her that outlines the perfect poison. It would seem that Bella came good on her vow to protect her best friend Raven from his abusive stepmother. Because God forbid the characters actually talked! to each other honestly and put their heads together!!! If that happened, this book would've been solved within one chapter.
