About this deal

All canister stoves suffer a performance drop in cold weather. The colder the fuel, the lower the vapor pressure, and the lower the burner output. As far as the fuel, the output pressure in any canister stove is governed by the temperature of the gas inside the canister. As temperature drops, so does pressure. The result can be noticeably longer boil times and difficulty lighting the burner with the built-in piezoelectric ignitor. Jetpower’s lower firing rate reduces canister cooling and increases performance. Jetpower fuel, with propane, helps to mitigate cold weather problems. This means some EN417 canisters, such as the Campingaz C206 fuel, are incompatible with Jetboil stoves. Jetboil state that their product performs best with their Jetpower brand fuel canisters. They also say that since they have not tested their products with other fuel canisters, they cannot claim the other canisters are safe to use with Jetboil stoves. If you’re wondering how long does Jetboil fuel last, the nuanced answer is that the length of time Jetboil stove fuel lasts depends on many factors. Like a lot of camping or hiking activities, people have different needs, comfort levels, fitness, and preferences.

A 100g or 110g gas canister lasts approximately 3 – 5 days of typical use. These canisters should allow you to boil around 2.5 litres of water each day, enough to cover 10 – 14 meals. Note: Working with flamable liquids and gases can be dangerous. User’s assume all risks if they are using this Instructable when handling liquid fuel and gases. The manufacture publishes on its canister not to store it at temperatures above 120F° or 50C°, and to store it in a cool, dry place away from children. Basically these canisters like the same temperature conditions that humans like. Where Is the Safest Place in the House to Store Jetboil Fuel? The basement of your home is likely the safest place to store Jetboil fuel. Usually basements have cooler, steady temperature environments, with less seasonal temperature extremes than a garage or attic, and are less likely to have solar related temperature gains, via windows, in areas of storage. As long as you can control your basements humidity if needed, with a dehumidifier, and store your Jetboil fuel away from ignition sources, like a furnace or water heater, you can safely keep it for years in this area of your home. But if you have a JetBoil, you may have noticed that the official JetBoil fuel canisters (called “Jetpower”) are a little on the expensive side. Plus, if you’re not close to any larger outdoor stores, getting those JetBoil canisters can be close to impossible. Originally invented in 2001, the Jetboil is one of the most well-liked and convenient camping stoves. Jetboil is light, it is easy to operate, and it works for a lot of different camping cooking methods. The stove is functional for any kind of camping trip, but depending on the camping trip length you will want to think about how big a fuel canister you plan to bring to fuel the stove. Also, the valve seal can fall apart if left for a very long time or in poor conditions. How Much Does a Jetboil Fuel Canister Weigh? 100g Jetboil fuel f) Cost fuel per gram of both Receiving & Donor canisters (using data from Refilling Canister Spec sheet)

While it is legal to refill single-use canisters in the US at this time, it is the individual’s responsibility to follow all local, state and federal laws. Currently, federal law prohibits the transport of refilled single-use canisters in commercial vehicles. If you did the math, that equals approximately 71 uses. So, my range of 27-40 meals is a more general estimate based on weather and meal choices. If it is colder, it will take longer to boil, which means you will use more fuel. And if you make a meal that takes longer to cook, same deal. Remember that if Jetboil said anything else, they could be held legally responsible for any issues. But do other brand fuels work with Jetboil? Yes! You can use a scale or water to determine how much fuel is left in any camping stove fuel canister. Use a Scale

At half power on a Jetboil, you can save a lot of gas. It will take longer to get the water boiling, but if you have time and can wait, this would be an effective way to save some fuel for later use. Plus, you will save some money! Place the Receiver canister & Gas Saver Plus with legs on scale (Photo Set 5 top left) to determine if

If the transfer process stopped before you were able to transfer the amount needed, purge off some fuel Eg: 2 x people eating 3 hot meals a day including a drink (6 liters of boiling water) per day = 60gms of fuel per day or 19.5 mins of burn time What you’re cooking and for how long

You can repeat this method for 230g and 450g as well, though, with some basic math, it should be pretty easy to tell how long they will last. Generally, 230g is about double 100g, and 450g is a little more than double the 230g. In a nutshell, Jetboil’s Jetpower fuel brings a high-performing fuel blend to the table. I’ve laid out some alternative brands of fuel that are compatible with a Jetboil stove further down this article. Recommended fuel for Jetboil stoves Jetboil uses its reputation for fuel efficiency to justify its higher prices and heavier weights compared to other camping stoves. Jetboil is designed to use Jetpower fuel canisters, a blend of propane and isobutane. These canisters are optimised for performance and efficiency in Jetboil systems and are the recommended fuel source for best results. I always weigh new canisters (in grams) at room temperature (75 F) and record the weight on the bottom of each new canister with a sharpie pen. That total weight is then used to calculate how much fuel remains after each use. When I refill that canister later on, I only refill to that weight using the same brand of fuel. (Note: It is important to use scales that can be calibrated and that have Tare functions - otherwise you might be better off just estimating the weight instead.)

One method for refilling canisters uses temperature to increase the transfer of fuel between canisters. For example, the upper canister might be around 75 F and the lower canister cooled in a freezer to around 0 F. The cooling reduces the PSI in the lower canister (refer to chart above). This results in a higher PSI in the top canister and a lower PSI in the bottom canister. The PSI differential will transfer liquid fuel faster before stopping. In this method of transfer, it is common for too much fuel to be transferred resulting in dangerous over-pressure situations when the temperatures normalize and/or they are stored in hot environments. Be very careful if you use this method of refilling single-use canisters. Donor canister (Photo Set 3 top right), and set unit upright on canister legs (Photo Set 3 bottom left)Number of expected cooking events and water boils with Jetboil’s most efficient stoves during real world use This is one of the “How long is a piece of string?” questions. How long your Jetboil fuel will last comes down to a number of factors that include ambient temperature, amount of food you are cooking, wind, and what gas setting you are using. Always, always, err on the side of caution and take extra fuel, especially if you are traveling into areas where you don’t expect to find many people. That extra 100 gms might just be the hot meal that keeps you going until you are rescued if things go pear-shaped… The colder it is, the harder it is for any gas canister to produce the pressure to burn well. Wind will blow your heat away, and large volumes of water will take longer to heat to the desired temperature and use more fuel.
