As an introduction to walking in the Lake District, and to Britain’s second national park in general (the Lake District was given protected status just a few weeks after the Peak District was declared Britain’s first national park), this rewarding holiday is ideal. At times demanding (you’ll need to be sure-footed), often thrilling, never boring, not only does it feature several iconic lakes and fells (including Windermere, England’s longest lake; Coniston Water, where Donald Campbell broke the water speed record four times; and up to three of the 214 fells detailed in Alfred Wainwright’s seven-volume pictorial guide to the Lake District), but it also offers the chance to visit places associated with some of the most illustrious cultural figures to have been inspired by the Cumbrian scenery. A route for flower lovers, and ascending from the village of El Palmar with its distinctive 'pie-shaped- quarry, this takes you along a camino real lined with lush flora to traverse a ridge – carpeted in wildflowers from late-February – which offers panoramic views including, if the visibility is clear, a superb aspect of Mount Teide.Take the local bus (it's only a 10-minute walk to the bus stop) to the western end of the Levada Nova. There are three possible starting points, depending on how far you wish to walk. Wherever you choose to begin, you will be rewarded with a fascinating but relatively easy walk across the south-west of the island, following this flower-lined waterway along the contours, as it winds initially through villages and then shady eucalyptus forests before descending to your hotel. En route, there are plenty of places to stop and enjoy your picnic. NB we have not provided an elevation profile for this route because it is on the flat. The inns in Coniston and Windermere were in wonderful old houses that reminded me of the "Clue" board game. The Wordsworth museum in Grasmere was especially worthwhile.

Climbing above the town, this route follows the 18th-century trails of lava that devastated Garachico to the traditional hill town of San Juan del Reparo, before returning down a second lava flow along a panoramic path – little used except by locals – that winds down to the coast.
