About this deal

His fiction has appeared in countless magazines and anthologies and has been translated into multiple languages, drawing praise from Publisher's Weekly, Cemetery Dance, Rue Morgue, Scream, The Ginger Nuts of Horror and others.

Lori is just such a fanatic. Her obsession is with Edmund Cox, a man of sadistic cruelty who butchered more than 20 women. She’s gone so far as to forge a relationship with him, visiting him in prison and sending him letters on a regular basis. She will do anything to get close to him, so when he gives her a task, she eagerly accepts it. In hopes of further developing a sentimental relationship with Cox, Lori agrees to help him find a person only known as the River Man, due to his whereabouts being located in Hollow River, hiding in the bushy woods of Killen. Lori must first go to the cabin of Cox, and find a particular key that she must take to the River Man. While she prepares for the trip, her little sister, Abby, who suffers from brain damage and catatonic episodes, begs her to bring her along the trip to the river. Lori accepts reluctantly, and the two embark to the woods, in hopes of finding this mysterious individual of great influence that Cox seems to deem as very important.

What I liked: Triana is a Splatterpunk Award winner writing, so you know immediately that things will not be pretty. And while there are moments of beauty, sentences showing true love between characters, ‘Gone to See the River Man’ is at its core a story covered in rust and rot. Every single woman in this book is written horribly, and no one has redeeming qualities. The only slightly “redeeming” person is Abby, and frankly writing a disabled person I’m always wary of, but especially when they’re depicted as innocent and childlike…it seems pretty ableist to me?? I dunno. LORI IS JEALOUS OF HER OLDER SISTER AND WANTS THE LOVE THAT SHE DOESNT HAVE FROM ANYONE BECAUSE HER SISTER STOLE HER " CRUSH" AND HER SISTER IS THE ALL AROUND PERFECT GIRL AND STUFF ETC ETCI thought the setting could save it; deep forests with oldie blues overtones that, in other works (namely, Christopher Buehlman's Those Across the River) are written far better than here.
