About this deal

Before I made any cuts on the pieces for my project, I tried the setup on a few test pieces. With the saw turned off, I positioned the 45-degree mark on the workpiece so that it was centered from side to side on the saw blade. It features wall mounted storage bins and floating shelves that all hang on French cleats! Both of the drawer units shown below hang on a single French cleat to ensure that the tops are perfectly even. How to install a French cleat Our step by step instructions are designed as a guideline to build a French cleat storage system and a timber toolbox. For a French cleat system to work, you will need a straight and true surface. If your walls are uneven or you think the system will need some extra support, it can be a good idea to clad the area where the cleats will be mounted first. Use matching plywood or large sheet timber for a contrasting look.

My son barely weighs 70 pounds, but I tested my own weight (which is significantly more than that) and it didn't budge! There's the tiniest bit of give, but that's the nature of wood. His pull up bar has way more flex than this thing!I’ve always made french cleats using my table saw. This was my first time making cleats with a circular saw and the Straight Edge Guide. To get the most accurate cuts, I recommend making a circular saw jig, using a circular saw guide, or just clamp an extra board down to guide the saw in a straight line. These methods can work for a jig saw as well. A crooked cut will make your cleat hang crooked! Then, I placed the Kreg Straight Edge Guide on my workpiece. I positioned the cut line indicators on my marks, clamped the guide, and pushed the cut line indicators towards the guide. Next, I made the cut making sure to keep the baseplate of the saw against the guide for the entire length of the cut.

The top board will be screwed into the box, and the bottom board will be attached to the wall. You only want to drill holes in the solid side, not the angled part of the 2x4, so mark a line 2" down along the entire length. Wood pitch not only builds up on your saw blades but also on the table and rip fence of your table saw. This buildup causes friction. Waxing your table saw reduces friction and reduces the chances of oxidation. Learn how to wax your table saw and which wax I use here. To maximise the sheet timber, we have designed our cleats so that they are 5 inches or approximately 130mm wide. You can easily tweak this measurement to suit your space and custom design. My son was thrilled to try out his new hangboard mount as soon as he got home from school. He can just barely reach the bottom holds when he stands on his tiptoes, so he has plenty of room to grow! (Can I just brag for a minute about the fact that he's holding his entire body up by four fingers? I can't do that!) The width of the cleats is up to you. To get, for example, 2½-inch wide cleats, first “rip” the plywood into straight five-inch strips on the table saw (ripping refers to cutting the material lengthwise). After all the strips are ripped, adjust the saw blade to cut on a 45-degree angle and rip each board down the center to create two French cleats. Each narrower board will now have a 45-degree angle and can be installed as a cleat on the wall. 3. Keep It Level I like to make these cuts on top of a sheet of foam insulation that I keep around just for this purpose. It keeps the entire board supported, and I can cut into it without damaging my workbench underneath! Set the blade angle Other hangboard ideas I found utilized a corner brace or a big bulky stand, but we don't have the space for those options either.

Inspect the cables and blade of the chop saw and circular saw before they are plugged in, to ensure they are in good condition. If any of the elements need to be replaced, make sure this is done before construction begins. I used my finger to feel both edges of the test piece and adjusted the fence until the pieces were the same width.I used a stud finder to locate the studs along that line. After I found all of the studs, I used a pencil to mark the center of each stud on the wall. Measure the distance from the edge of the board to the mark. If you're using a table saw, set the fence to that distance. For a circular saw or jig saw, draw a line down the length of the board. Use an edge guide for circular saw or jig saw
