Saccharin is often blended with other artificial sweeteners to compensate for each sweetener’s weaknesses.The charity, Diabetes UK, takes the approach that low-calorie artificial sweeteners can be included as part of the diabetic diet, as long as the food they are eaten with does not itself contain high fat or calorie content. Rather than taking another type of sweetener, the fifth group consumed equivalent amounts of glucose powder, while the last group had no supplement. Aspartame– Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that can be better employed in cold foods. Depending on the type, higher temperatures can decrease its sweetening effects. Popular brands include NutraSweet and Equal. Aspartame has been in the media spotlight recently in regards to its safety. Its popularity further increased during the 1960s and 1970s among dieters as a result of its ‘calorie-free’ status. Benefits of saccharin However, it is worth being aware of what the food you are eating contains – foods that contain low-calorie sweeteners are not necessarily low-calorie themselves.

The researchers said that artificial sweeteners “should not be considered a healthy and safe alternative to sugar”. The BHF verdictAlongside sucralose and saccharine, the other sweeteners included in the study were aspartame and stevia. Saccharin belongs to a class of compounds known as sulfonamides, which can cause allergic reactions in some individuals. Not all of the carbohydrate from polyols is absorbed, so it’s unclear how polyols should be counted’ by those adjusting their insulin dose according to their carbohydrate intake. Polyols are often used in products marketed as ‘diabetic’, which can be as high in fat and calories as standard products, so they are not recommended.
