About this deal

Kenji, il mio tesoro amore cucciolo. Un personaggio che mi ha fatto sbellicare dalle risate per le sue battute inopportune e stravaganti, con le quali funge un po’ da giullare di corte della situazione. The rest of the book is kind of a blur because I read all three one after the other and can't seperate them anymore (thank Goodreads for this three book thingy). It doesn't make it okay. He did not deserve or earn her forgiveness. And once I've finished annotating all of these books, I will share with you all why that is. Like the novels, if you wish. But at least like them knowing the facts: Warner is abusive. Juliette and Warner are in an abusive relationship.

I still think the writing at the beginning of the book was intriguing and clever, the issue is Mafi dropped the charade too easily. Juliette, in all rights, should be insane, or at the very least, she should have severe PTSD and attachment issues. She had zero healthy relationships as a kid, she didn't get the motherly nurturing and physical affection children need, she didn't have friends to develop social skills, she was in solitary confinement without seeing another human for almost an entire year—as a TEENAGER. She had to shower in the dark and eat gross food. I assumed, since it was so played up at the beginning of the first book, that she was going to have mental health struggles. Like her sanity would genuinely come into question. I thought that was going to be one of her obstacles. It really wasn’t. And maybe Mafi planned on fleshing out her mental problems in the later books. Perhaps her fleeing with Adam completely unprecedented was a form of attachment issues (even though she hardly remembered the guy and they never even talked, but yeah sure, they’re in love). If she had stayed true to her original writing I would have liked the books better, but she dropped the originality for something generic. It became superfluous and distracting. Love love love this book series. And although I know there are a lot of negative aspects about it and that it isn't perfect, I still think it was pretty good. I am baffled by the fact that people find their relationship romantic. I am deeply saddened by the fact that "broken" characters somehow are given the okay to horrifically damage their partners in the name of love. As if the fact that they love this person makes it okay that they hurt them in these ways.

Games

Which is where I'm going to critize the world building. I get that Juliette apparently wasn't interested in figuring out what exactly was going on with the world and the Reestablishment, but it did feel wrong for her to not ask for proof when Castle told her that the world was, in fact, better off than they thought. Or for her to never again show any interest in why she has the power she's so afraid of. Fossero tutti così i distopici, ne leggerei molti di più, ma sfortunatamente una trama ben costruita non è affatto idilliaca. I knew something was wrong with that kid from the moment he was shoved into Juliette's prison and I don't mean the plot twist in the first book.

Tahereh Mafi is a great author. Seriously, her writing style is amazing and her characters three-dimensional, believable people. Mafi did a fantastic job at relaying the fact that Juliette is… troubled in the head at the start of the book. the numbers the repetitive thoughts the contradicting thoughts—sometimes all at once—was a very good idea. the crossing out of words/sentences to show how she’s at odds with herself was cool too. I just really liked it. It read fast. It’s original. It reignited a fresh desire in myself to write with creative intent, not just to get the point across. To any girl who meets a boy who was "broken" by the way someone in his life treated him, who gets treated horribly by this boy -- run. His brokenness does not make it okay for him to hurt you. His brokenness does not mean that he deserves your forgiveness. There are plenty of people who suffer abuse and do not lash out and abuse the people they "love." Warner's obsession with Juliette is terrifying. And I haven't even truly scratched the surface yet.

Toys

Everyone gets a happy ending. (obviously not the bad guys lol). By happy ending, I don’t mean everything is perfect, but I am saying that almost everyone gets what they wanted (everyone meaning the good characters). Also, although there was one big main goal that was shared, everyone still had specific things they wanted, which eventually happened. I think Shatter Me is hands down the best book series I’ve read and I’ve read a lot of books. The Shatter me series has so many aspects that make it amazing, but I’ll name the main ones. He really loves his mom. Warner, seems super harsh and cold-hearted, which he can be, but never ever when it comes to his mother. Warner goes through so much to try to get his mother well and puts her before people’s opinion of him. The first time we see him cry is when his mom died and it was heartbreaking. Since it's Juliette, there was still some (a lot) emotional garbage and reasoning but she eventually found the right guy and the wrong guy turned into DEFINETELY the wrong guy (called it) and even though it ended kind of before the real action probably would have started (what with taking over the world and such) it ended on a good note.
