About this deal

Box shrubs thrive when in neutral to very mildly acidic soil, though they can be tolerant of a range of pH levels and can be grown successfully in many different soils. As you can see from the above, feeding box trees is a simple process that differs when growing in the ground compared with container cultivation. Buxus microphylla ‘Golden Triumph’ – one of the hardier cultivars of this Asian species, with slow growing, smaller leaves. Young foliage starts yellow, turning a yellowish green two-tone. It can be grown in full or partial sun and thrives in moist, yet well drained soil.

Compact cultivars, such as B. sempervirens ‘Suffruticosa’ and B. microphylla, can be planted 10–15cm (4–6in) apart. Once this is done remove all the cuttings and then carefully remove as much debris as possible from under and around the plants. This not only removes as much infected material as possible but also allows more air to the centre of the plants. For all varieties of Buxus, Box or Buxus Sempervirens Buxus Feed is part of Vitax’s new specialist fertiliser and feed range, and developed specifically for Buxus growers. A staple for most gardens, Buxus can be used as a structure, in pots or hedges, and is a popular choice for patio planters. Buxus Feed is part of Vitax’s new specialist fertiliser and feed range, and developed specifically for Buxus growers. Feed box growing in containers with a balanced, organic, liquid plant feed once a month through the summer season, avoiding excessively high nitrogen feeds.Buxus sempervirens'Suffruticosa' – this dwarf form is a slow growing, denser shrub than common box. It’s a good choice for low hedging and is commonly used for parterres and knot gardens.

For hedging–prepare the planting trench by thoroughly digging over the soil to a spade's depth and up to 90cm (3ft) wide. This will help the roots to spread out easily.Rootgrow Mycorrhizal Fungi - Rootgrow Mycorrhizal Fungi is ideal for application during planting, and we advise using it for all planting projects. This product ensures a well-established root system, better drought tolerance, healthier plant growth and superior establishment. We consider this a must, as do the Royal Horticulture Society. Acid, alkaline or neutral. Moist but well-drained. Chalk, loam or sand. Use a good compost like No 2 Supreme Potting Compost when potting on.

If well cared for, small plants should form a reasonable hedge or, in the case of B. sempervirens ‘Suffruticosa’, a parterre in three to five years. Initial symptoms are the delayed emergence of new growth. Patches of wilted and discoloured leaves increase in size before falling from the plant. Spores masses that often appear underneath the leaves in wet or humid conditions are pink rather than white for box blight. Treatment All of these choices offer a good nutritional profile and slow-release fertiliser for these plants. If your soil is poor or infertile, spread organic matter, such as well-rotted manure or garden compost, over the prepared area and fork it in well. Don’t simply place a layerin the base of the trench or hole.Unfortunately, this shrub can be prone to a number of pest and disease issues, so it is important to make sure that box is kept in good condition, as healthy plants are able to better withstand any issues that come their way. Of course, as with growing box trees in the ground, the growing medium should be your first concern. We are situated in the scenic New Forest in Hampshire near the town of Lymington.
