About this deal

What makes it so special? Well, this particular combo features 10 Watts of power, Dual 3.15″ speakers and a bunch of different amp voicings and built-in effects. It uses the Yamaha’s Virtual Circuitry Modeling (VCM) technology, which significantly improves the guitar tone. But overall, it’s still a great practice amp. In my opinion, it’s definitely one of the best modeling amps that you can choose for home practice. It’s affordable and it sounds great – who needs anything else? That’s why I think that the advantages of this combo outweigh its disadvantages! Are There Any Other Good Alternatives? Yamaha THR5 is loud enough to efficiently practice at home without annoying your neighbors. It’s not the loudest amp in the world, but it can also work pretty well for small jam sessions or intimate performances. Where can I find out more about Yamaha amps? Conventional amps work great on stage. But what about everywhere else you play? Most amps are just small versions of stage amps - but how you play at home isn't just a small version of how you play on stage, so why would an amp based on that really give you what you need? Yamaha’s positioning of the THR5A as an offstage amp seems absolutely accurate. At first, the small speakers and modest volume may seem limiting, but the amp has a lot of potential for home practice sessions, in the studio, or even for a house concert or quiet gig. It’s fun to hear the produced sound added by the impressive effects. The volume might not fill a club or compete with a drummer, but it’s more than enough to help you match the volume of a fiddle, banjo, percussionist, or group of vocalists at a practice session. With its battery power, the THR5A is a tempting choice for busking, although there is a limit to how much air the small speakers can move in an open space. But in the living room, bedroom, or studio, the THR5A can fill the room with a rich, spacious sound that’s sure to please. SPECS

Most of THR's effects feature VCM effects processors. Based on the technology used in Yamaha's professional audio mixers, VCM effects give unsurpassed realism and quality. Virtual Circuitry Modeling effects are capable of capturing subtleties that basic digital simulations cannot even approach, going beyond simple simulation and delivering the truly musical performance that makes classic analog gear invaluable. Why we love it…

Firstly, you have to bear in mind that this is a small practice amp – it’s okay for home use, but it’s not ideal for performing or recording. Of course, it’s possible to play intimate gigs with it, but it’s not the most optimal solution. The lead setting was a little bland for our tastes. It landed somewhere between clean and crunch, so it didn’t give us any real clarity, nor did it give us enough break up to make it tonally interesting. Brit Hi was a fun setting to play with, especially as you don’t typically expect that much growl to come from such a small amp! We also enjoyed experimenting with the modern voicing, which when paired with the phaser effect and hall reverb gave us some ethereal “Bill and Ted” style tones. THR utilizes a newly designed amp-modelling technology using Yamaha's Virtual Circuitry Modelling (VCM) technology. VCM gives THR the power to model real amps incredibly accurately, with each control working and responding exactly as it does on the real thing. Yamaha THR5 is a small combo suitable for the most demanding guitarists out there. Thanks to the compact size and affordable price, it’s actually one of the most popular amps manufactured by Yamaha. As far as downsides are concerned, I wished Yamaha provided a 3-band EQ. There’s just a single tone knob, and nothing else to shape the sound really.

Let’s dive deeper with research to find out what exactly makes the Yamaha THR5 so good and so popular among the guitarists all around the world. Firstly, we’ll take a close look on the specifications and the main advantages of that model. We’ll also investigate if it has any potential flaws. VCM effects are capable of capturing subtleties that simple digital simulations cannot even approach, going beyond simple simulation and delivering the truly musical performance that makes classic analog gear invaluable even in today's digital production environment.

You have your big amp that sounds great cranked up to 10. Maybe you have your practical, smaller amp for rehearsals and smaller shows. Now you have your perfect third amp. The amp for everything else, THR. Prepare to spend a lot more time playing guitar... THR5
