I received a copy of the beautifully designed Bird Cottage by Eva Meijer for my birthday, after hearing many wonderful things about it - Town and Country, for example, describe the novel as 'a celebration of a life spent immersed in nature', and Country Life deems it 'a great pleasure for birders and readers alike'. Bird Cottage has been translated from the original Dutch by Antoinette Fawcett, and is printed in its English edition by Pushkin Press, a publishing house which I always gravitate toward. The book chronicles Howard’s life, reconstructing in meditative prose and striking imagery an extraordinary person. The book is hybrid, consisting of small chapters imagining Howard’s relationship with her favorite Great Tit, Star, and longer chapters detailing her own development. Bits of time, memories, and learning experiences are woven together from filaments that make a textured tapestry. Howard’s father, a retired accountant, was also an accomplished poet. He loved birds and would rescue wounded fledglings. Howard was part of this caring routine and had a crow, Charles, who would come into her room and exchange musings or play. In her small house years later, her favorite birds were the Great Tits, curious and clever, who roosted in various nooks, crannies, and boxes she set up in the cottage. This intimacy with the birds, each one with individual needs and desires, afforded her the ideal situation for examination of their behaviors in a natural setting. The charming and peaceful location is lovely but could not quite compensate for the fact that this pleasant house has seen too many visitors and now needs to upgrade some tired and rather grubby (it has to be said) floor coverings and soft furniture.” Howard leeft echt met de vogels, die alles voor haar zijn. De ramen staan altijd open en vogels vliegen in en uit. Ze slapen in nestkastjes in haar slaapkamer. Howard is er van overtuigd dat alle laboratoriumonderzoeken voor vertekende resultaten zorgen. Simpelweg omdat de omgeving kunstmatig is en dieren zich dus nooit zullen gedragen zoals ze in de natuur zouden doen. Voor ieder ander zou Howard's manier van leven een opoffering zijn. Maar niet voor haar. Het is voor haar de enige manier van leven.Bed was super comfy, clean and the room was filled with all the amenities you could need for free. I was worried about whether I'd be able to hear the A1 traffic from where the cottage is, but I didn't hear anything when going to sleep. Een ander boek dan "normaal". Dat is mijn (positieve!) oordeel over 'Het vogelhuis' van Eva Meijer. Een bijzonder verhaal over een alles behalve "normale" vrouw die leefde voor de vogels 🐦 The sitting area’s furnished with a sofa and a couple of comfy armchairs with an ottoman and large TV whilst the dining area has a circular table with four chairs plus butlers and console tables. Eva Meijer writes in a fluent, quiet way. As if you walk through a beautiful, fragrant, green forest, full of fresh spring leaves and starting juice streams. A refreshing reading experience. Although the story is not always cheerful, it still feels fresh and sparkling. And light. Not heavy. Later, Emes’ partner John Webb still further enhanced the Dingle, damming the stream to form three long pools, creating a network of paths and adding other features : an icehouse, Rotunda and caves. All these are there to explore today.

The story gives a glimpse of her rich family, mother who is occupied with organizing the soirees and managing everyone. At her parties Len also plays her talents on violin. It seems as the parents are struggling with life. Father, who is a poet and struggles more and more to create something that would satisfy him. “Since the accident Mother has started drinking in the afternoons again. Father, however, has stopped.” We have chosen a range of self-catering holiday cottages in England, Scotland and Wales that are all recommended because of their proximity to RSPB nature reserves or areas where there are an abundance of different species of birds. As well as birds you should also be able to see other wild animals in their natural environment as well as walk, hike, ride, cycle, fish, sail and take part in other outdoor pursuits. Readers will also meet Star, Howard’s favourite Great Tit, who learns to count and is generally very intelligent; Jane, who sings better than the males; Inkey; Smoke; Monocle; and of course Baldhead, who taught all his children to trust Howard, and came to see her every day, until his very last. Bird Cottage by Eva Meijer is out now Ihr abgeschiedenes Leben im „Vogelhaus“ und ihre besondere Beziehung zu den hiesigen Kohlmeisen habe ich hingegen sehr gerne verfolgt. Ich kann mich auch einfach sehr gut mit Menschen identifizieren, die ihre Zeit lieber in der Gesellschaft von Tieren verbringen und den Kontakt zu Menschen reduzieren. Ich finde es unheimlich faszinierend, dass ihr die scheuen Tiere so nah kamen, in ihrem Haus schliefen und sie bei Gefahr sogar um Hilfe baten. Solch innige Beziehungen zwischen Mensch und Tier berühren mich ganz grundsätzlich, ich bin aber froh, dass dieses besondere Verhältnis nie kitschig dargestellt wurde. Denn obwohl Len Howard die Tiere und ihre Studien sehr am Herz lagen, hat sie der Natur ihren Lauf gelassen. Das gefiel mir sehr gut. The story shifts between present time to when she was a child and later an adult. It is also intertwined with stories about birds, which “have their origin in Howard’s own anecdotes in Birds as Individuals and Living with Birds.”

Howard got to know the birds intimately as individuals, and they her. She studied their relationships and behaviour, and wrote down their biographies and songs. I very much admired Meijer's interpretation of Len Howard, and would dearly like to learn more about her. Meijer notes that very little about Len's life has actually been preserved, and that she pieced together the novel with the use of sparse known facts, and Len's own work. Unfortunately, Len's books appear very difficult to get hold of affordably, but I can only hope that they are reissued at some point in the near future. I am sure that the many delighted readers of Bird Cottage would love to read Len's original work. This lifestyle however, did require personal sacrifices: she had to retreat from human society and rarely allowed visitors to her house or garden because humans scared the birds. The birds were forever coming to sit on the keys of the typewriter when she tried to type, or the keys of the piano when she tried to play – and would also leave their droppings behind, which got in the way somewhat. Living with birds generally involved a lot of cleaning. A delightful book, we get to know some of these birds by name and description. One of those quitter books in which I love to become absorbed. So much if it was just lovely.

The outside patio area is bright and sunny and has patio furniture all ready for you to enjoy spending time together alfresco. We stayed at Birdsong for two nights in August 2020. Before we arrived, we had a phone call from our hosts asking for an approximate arrival date - very friendly! When we arrived we were greeted outside, safely, by our hosts as well.Wonderfully light and airy with a high ceiling supported by exposed beams and stud work. Double doors open from the living area to the east-facing terrace and private garden – great for the summer months, and a modern designer log burner exudes heat throughout the room in the winter.
