I've appeared on CBS News, in USA Today, and at many other outlets to offer analysis on breaking technology news. Different brands make devices aimed at different buyers, so there's no 'best' brand, there's just a brand that's best for you. If you can, we recommend stretching your budget to get the Fire HD 8 over the Fire 7. It offers a more enjoyable experience for everything from reading novels to watching your favorite shows, and the extra RAM should mean less stuttering when you switch apps. We were blown away when we tested the tablet – the chip was great for tasks like photo and video editing, as well as gaming. But that’s not all this tablet has going for it. For the first time in an iPad, it also has a mini-LED screen, with a remarkably high 1,600-nit peak brightness, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 2048 x 2732 resolution. It’s crisp, bright, vibrant, and all-round impressive. Some Windows tablets have ditched Intel chips in favor of Arm-based alternatives from companies like Qualcomm and MediaTek. They include the earlier Microsoft Surface Pro X and late-2022 Surface Pro 9 (SQ3), tablets with Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. We haven't seen any recent tablets that use processors from AMD.Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test. The iPad Pro 12.9 (2021) is a spectacular tablet, with its headline feature arguably being the M1 chipset that powers it. This chipset was lifted straight from Apple’s top-end 2021 Macs, so you’re truly getting desktop power in a tablet here.

All of the major carriers offer a selection of cellular-capable tablets. It's easy to find them at a discount when you upgrade your plan or buy a new smartphone. Then you have the question of connectivity. With eminently portable designs, it's only natural that some shoppers will want tablets that feature the same sort of mobile data that they enjoy on their smartphones. A few Windows tablets on the market have 5G and LTE connectivity and can be added to your mobile phone plan. If Wi-Fi is not always an option where you use your tablet or you don't want to deal with tethering via your phone, this TCL tablet keeps you online. It's not as cheap as others on this list, but it still costs much less than competing 5G models. Although the Lenovo Tab P11 Plus isn't the newest option on the list, it's still a good choice. We're big fans of the quad Dolby Atmos speakers for watching movies and listening to music, while the octa-core MediaTek Helio G90T processor is plenty powerful. Its microSD card slot adds value, too. Who It's For The iPad Pro 12.9 (2021) also has a long-lasting battery, a decent camera, a premium aluminum design, and support for the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil 2 – these are sold separately, but turn it into a real productivity machine, and we used them non-stop in our testing period. If you want an affordable Android tablet that offers full access to the Google Play Store, this tablet is worth a look. You can certainly find cheaper alternatives, but they won't perform nearly as well or be as enjoyable for consuming media.

A tablet that's as powerful as a conventional laptop but still slim and light enough to hold and tap with one hand was once the exclusive province of Hollywood's imagination. But thanks to manufacturers' ability to fit more powerful hardware into ever slimmer and lighter devices, it's now possible to hold in your hand a Windows-based tablet that can do almost everything your laptopdoes—and, in most cases, is even more portable. Think of it as an Apple iPad combined with the power and flexibility of the Windows 11operating system. You can't go wrong with the latest version of Apple's entry-level iPad. It retails for a reasonable price compared with the iPad Air and the iPad Pro, but still offers a 10.9-inch display that's sufficiently large for multitasking and productivity. Who It's For This is the best iPad for most people. It performs well, has plenty of features, and gets you into the Apple ecosystem for a relatively affordable price. The iPad Pro 11 (2021) also has a smaller, lighter build than the 12.9-inch model, making it more portable – as a result of its smaller size and inferior screen it’s also more affordable, though certainly far from cheap. If you do have extra cash to spend though, you can always shell out on a Magic Keyboard or an Apple Pencil, both of which are supported. All of which means this is a very powerful, versatile slate – albeit one that’s slightly let down by its restrictive software. Rear cameras aren’t too important for tablets, but make sure your device has a respectable front-facing camera for video calls. Remember that 2MP is the minimum for 720p video, so use that as a cutoff in your searches. We wouldn't call the iPad a cheap tablet, but there are some good reasons to invest in one. Most notably, you can stay current with software updates for at least several years. That's much longer than almost all the budget tablets on our list. If you get an older, used iPad, it's likely to get cut out of the software update cycle in a year or two. The Lenovo Yoga Tab 13 is a really interesting tablet – one that goes well beyond just being a smartphone with a bigger screen. That starts with its design, as it has a built-in stand that lets you angle it on surfaces without any sort of case, or even hang it off things – hence the Yoga name. We found this incredibly useful, as we could easily position the Tab on different surfaces when streaming music or movies.

When choosing a tablet, the first thing you'll need to decide is how much you want to do with it. Will it be an extra device for entertainment and productivity, or will it replace a laptop as a main computing device? Today's tablets can certainly handle all of the tasks of a basic laptop. Then you'll need to decide on your price range, because tablets can range from cheap budget devices to very expensive cutting edge portables, far more expensive than the laptops they replace. Finally, it would be helpful to choose between an Apple iPadOS tablet and an Android device, based on the services and software you prefer. How we test tablets So, if you want to get some proper work or creation done on a tablet, or you’re just a big tablet gamer, the iPad Pro 12.9 (2021) will be the perfect device. If your needs are lighter then you might find this too expensive and too big, if you somehow need more oomph, the M2 Pro is there, ready and waiting. If you are an extreme budget shopper or just want to see what it's like to have a tablet, the Fire 7 is what you should get. It won't keep up with an iPad or run as many apps, but streaming shows and movies are well within its wheelhouse. The iPad Pro 11 (2021) is a superb tablet, but one that’s just ever so slightly underwhelming in the face of the iPad Pro 12.9 (2021) with its Mini LED display. This instead has to settle for LCD like its predecessor, but it still has a great 11-inch 1668 x 2388 screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, and it has the same overpowered Apple M1 chipset as its larger sibling, so nothing should slow this down. Due to the weak Android tablet market, the OnePlus also didn't offer separate storage offerings. It did however come with a lovely green shade that we praised in our review.
