About this deal

I really wanted to like it, but was sadly disappointed. In the words of Sidney Sheldon, “The pain of disappointment is the price we pay for hope.” I didn't like Nani. I think the intention was to show her as an individual who doesn't know how to deal with the grief of losing her sister and father in death, is misunderstood by her mother and remaining sister, and as a result, falls into the hands of a beguiling and controlling man. But there's nothing in the story that makes this believable to me. The Middle Daughter is a social novel written by Chika Unigwe and published by Dzanc Books in 2018. [1] Unigwe drew her inspiration from the story of Hades and Persephone. [2] Characters [ edit ]

Final notes: The only thing that confused me a bit was the shift in perspectives. The chapters already clarify who’s view we’re seeing, but only Nani was told in the ‘I’ perspective. Nevertheless, the story was phenomenal, painful, but one everyone should try. Glad I got the arc :).

I was irritated by Ugo and their mother's behaviours. For deciding that they didn't want to know what had happened to her, didn't want to deal with it. It was difficult to wrap my head around; that a mother (sister) would choose to suppress their feelings instead of fighting for their loved one. They should have fought for Nani earlier. Irrespective of however anyone feels about this book, I think that one thing we can all agree on is the fact that her talent at putting together beautifully crafted prose, speaks for itself. While reading this book, I encountered a good number of such passages and sentences and I just had to reread before moving on, for the sheer pleasure of it. The Udodi, Chorus interludes, had a lot of these.

This is a heart-breaking, tender novel, full of beautiful prose. It is a novel which has lingered in the mind long after I finished reading it, and one I will read again. The Middle Daughter is an emotionally charged exploration of the ways in which a woman may fall victim to conventions designed to ensnare her. Chika Unigwe is a writer of great conviction and superior insight . . . Nani’s story drew me in from the start and pulled me under right up until the end’ AMINATTA FORNA The resulting grief leads her to find comfort with a preacher man, but she soon finds herself trapped in an abusive marriage.A lush, powerful tale of family and sisterhood from award-winning author Chika Unigwe, perfect for fans of Bernardine Evaristo and Tayari Jones Death and pain are constants beginning with the death of a daughter in America. Udodi’s tragic passing on the eve of her imminent return leaves the family unmoored with things hurtling downhill from that point.

this book is beautiful. Unigwe’s writing style is so breathtaking and fits this fantastic portrayal of nani’s life. the pure isolation of grief that nani experiences cuts her off from her family, physically and emotionally. this book brought me to tears a couple of times and i even had to pause in a few places to take in the writing and events within the story. it is a brilliant portrayal of how to find strength in such bad times. This was such an emotionally strenuous, intense, and powerful read. In her book, Unigwe explores family, social class, religion, grief, and motherhood through the lens of Nani, and sometimes Ugo, her younger sister. The blame culture is strong here, whilst religion reverence supersedes respectful worship and transcends into a dangerous weapon, one that Nani is beaten with many times. The May 2023 issue of World Literature Today ponders “The Future of the Book,” featuring a marquee interview with Azar Nafisi and contributions by others on the subject of books and book culture. The book review section rounds up the best new books from around the world, and additional interviews, poetry, short fiction and creative nonfiction, culture essays, a postcard from the former Yugoslavia, and an outpost from Berlin make the May issue your perfect summer reading companion.Do not let the pretty cover deceive you. This book will traumatize you in ways you didn't know was possible. I'm not going to lie, I blamed Nani for marrying him. For deciding that marrying her abuser was better than facing her family. Their relationship had deteriorated, but it had not gotten that bad. The consequences of her decision to go to Ephraim made my skin crawl. Chika Unigwe, award-winning author, former Booker Prize judge, and university professor is at the airport when the call goes through. She pleads for a little time to clear immigration. The Middle Sister is a heart-wrenching representation of how grief and trauma can create ripples of pain with survivors at times almost drowning and other times floating on top.
