Characters: I don’t watch the Real Housewives series, so I don’t know how much these women behave like those women. But almost all of the characters in One of Us Is Dead are just the worst. Shannon, reeling from her recent divorce from Bryce the Congressman, is delusional about her current situation. Karen, the one who literally thinks she “not like the other wives,” is clueless about her current situation. Crystal, Bryce’s new wife, is the most perceptive and tolerable character but she’s clearly hiding something about her past from the reader. Which brings us to Olivia …. MY THOUGHTS: Every now and then I like to read a novel about bitchy women, but One of Us is Dead takes this to a whole new level, and after the initial enjoyment, I'm afraid my enthusiasm began to wane to the point where I was toying with the idea of quitting this read. But then . . . something very unexpected happened that again, briefly, piqued my interest enough to carry me through to the end.

Reflect on the themes explored in the book, such as betrayal, revenge, greed, or power. How were these themes portrayed and developed throughout the story? Did they add depth to the plot and the characters’ motivations? In the end, some characters are willing to go to extreme lengths, including murder, to achieve their goals. Discuss the ethical implications of the characters’ actions and the choices they make. Were there any characters whose actions you found justifiable or understandable, despite their extreme measures? Shannon: once the most powerful woman in town, married to Bryce, the rich politician until her marriage falls apart and he leaves her for a younger woman whom he marries.

Now, unfortunately, for the not so great aspects. First and foremost, there were A LOT of characters to keep straight. But the real drag of the book was how contrived it all felt. I can’t really explain without providing at least one massive spoiler, but needless to say, it all felt decidedly too far-fetched by the end. Unlike the first two in the series which had their own twisted premises, most of this one was spent regurgitating the past. It almost felt like the events taking place were a subplot versus the star attraction itself. Starting more or less where One of Us Is Next left off, the character development was truly divine. After all, we got to watch these teens grow up, learning unbearably hard lessons along the way. Through a handful of POVs, the gaps from the first two books were filled in and one altogether deep, dark secret was laid bare. But it was those characters that truly had me from hello. Complex and mostly true-to-life, I connected with one and all. Consider the setting of the story and how it contributed to the overall mood and atmosphere of the book. Did the author use the setting to create tension or enhance the suspense? How did the location and time period affect the plot and the characters’ actions? The drama and cattiness of these women was so fun to listen to, and I couldn’t wait to find out who was dead and why. This book comes out on April 26, 2022, and I certainly recommend adding it to your TBR shelf before then.

A young, innocent Texan girl, she simply has no idea what she’s up against … This is the third book I’ve read by Jeneva Rose, and I fell in love with her writing with the very first, The Perfect Marriage. She has a way of spinning very fun stories and drawing you right in.
