In The Write Stuff approach to writing, the children explore high level, rich vocabulary and are taught grammar in context through different writing lenses on the Writing Rainbow. There are three lenses used to support children with their writing: Thank you so much! I am going to get mine to do a non-chronological report for the independent write! The Large Writing Rainbow symbols are a set of 27 brightly coloured classroom resources, measuring 28.5 cm in diameter, that mirror the writing lenses found on Jane Considine’s Writing Rainbow. By using these lenses, teachers can focus on a particular aspect of the Writing Rainbow. Pupils can then incorporate that lens in their planning and writing activities during the lesson. This allows them to become more confident on the range and repertoire of aspects to showcase in their independent writing. In the Enable section pupils write their own sentences, taking the opportunity to deepen the moment. ‘Deepen the Moment’ is where children are challenged to independently draw upon previously learnt skills and apply them to their writing during that chunk. Spelling is taught through the Spelling Shed scheme. In each year group, children will be taught specific spelling rules which they will build on and use throughout the scheme.During the initiate section children ‘chot’ (chat and jot) down their ideas from stimulating resources, such as pictures, music and drama. The children are encouraged to use ‘kind calling out’ where they call out examples of vocabulary, adverbs, onomatopoeia etc. During the Model section the teacher prepares children for writing by modelling the ideas, grammar and techniques of writing taken from the writing rainbow.
