What in the name of all toxic relationship/dysfunctional family craziness did I just read??! Fiona Cummins, what a dark, devious mind you must have to come up with this plot (and that is a compliment!). 😂

On Earth, salvaged Shongairi technology sets humanity up to recover and advance beyond the tragedy, united under the banner of the Terran Empire. Out of the Dark is an alien invasion science fiction novel by David Weber released by Tor Books on September 28, 2010. [1] It is an extended version of the short story of the same name published in the 2010 anthology Warriors edited by Gardner Dozois and George R. R. Martin. A sequel, titled Into the Light, was published more than a decade later in January 2021. The third book in the series, To Challenge Heaven is expected to be released in January of 2024. Having never read a book by this author, initially I found it a tough going. Soon the story emerged and I found myself right in the middle of the plot. The way that other characters throughout Karen's Cincinatti universe, are woven through the story with potted histories, makes you want to dive into her other novels. She is absolutely superb at what she does , there is a reason that she is a multi-million selling author, and this book, for me, is peak Rose.

Of course the Dani/Diesel romance is only half of the story, and we have murder galore in this instalment. The story is about a family that disappears and there is evidence of foul play at their house. Have they been kidnapped or murdered. Here there be monsters’ in the uncharted waters of the upmarket Essex seaside town of Midtown-on-Sea. In fact, these waters are shark infested with deep and dangerous under-currents. It’s a Tuesday morning when the Holden family disappear. Friend Julianne calls for Piper for their weekly jog, Piper‘s husband Gray’s car is unusually still on the drive, breakfast is on the table, washing circulating in the machine, phones are charging but none of the family are there. There is one definite sign that something is distinctly amiss, a fine mist of blood coating an antique chandelier. Coincidentally, DC Saul Anguish arrives in Midtown to join the major crimes unit led by DI Angus O’Neill but that’s quite another story. What develops and unfolds is told in non-linear timeline and from several perspectives and which flows extremely well. The Neighbour (my first read by Fiona Cummins) was one of my top reads two years ago, so it thrills me to pieces that Into the Dark lived up to that one. I will definitely be bumping When I Was Ten and The Collector series up my tbr. There were a lot of heartbreaking moments here since Michael was the victim of abuse. Diesel has his own story to tell, and he helped Michael deal with the feelings of guilt, shame and anger.

It all begins with a teenage boy struggling to save his brother from their brutal, sadistic stepfather. Michael sees a murder take place but who would believe him ? He's deaf, he's a bit of a loner and his mother who should protect him just doesn't care about anyone but herself. So when Michael meets his brothers football coach Diesel he has no idea that he's finally found the one person who not only believes him but understands everything Michael has gone through. Both books feature an interstellar polity of alien races, who ultimately resolve to exterminate the human race, before a previously unknown power saves the day.Dani has her reasons for rejecting Diesel, which we find out more about in this book. We learn more about her positive HIV status, her upbringing, her deafness and her previous heartbreaking romance with Adrian. Question everything - when you think you have this one figured out… think again I know I thought a few time pffft I see what’s happened here… nope… WRONG!!! It was great I love that bring on those twists - twist me up!

Diesel has always been a bit of a mystery and his silent affection for Dr. Dani thoroughly enchanting. And to see her reciprocate was a beautiful thing. Together these two are downright delightful even with all their personal baggage. They are captivating and interesting characters without a doubt. One morning, Julianne Hillier arrives at her best friend's house to go for their regular run together, but finds no one home. The family's phones are there, charging, the kettle is still warm, and their passports haven't been taken. Upstairs in the daughter's bedroom, a message is scrawled in blood: "make them stop". Wow, this is yet another excellent psychological thriller from this talented author, this one is deviously and deliciously dark from beginning to end and you savour every unpredictable twist and turn. You think you’ve figured the ever deepening mystery out, you haven’t! This is a
