About this deal

There is a whole massive industry behind grease and oil theory, as well as their alter ego: solvents and cleaning agents — and there are sub-genres within these categories aimed, at times, at specific bike-related applications (whether legitimate or a product of targeted marketing). The Phil grease is liked by a lot of people because it tends to stay where you put it for a long time. After drive side bearing replacement i decided to put some drops of gl-4 synthetic gear oil into it to see how it would perform. In the newer Ratchet EXP, one ratchet ring threads into the wheel hub, while the second slides in and out on splines inside the freehub to engage or disengage the freewheel, pushed by a single spring. For brake fittings, since you mentioned it, there are even products that don’t react negatively with the fluid or hose material or bladder/seal material within caliper or lever; SRAM offers a DOT grease to be used with its DOT-fluid based braking systems on the coupling nut.

The two ratchet rings are usually pressed together by large springs that encircle the freehub and sit behind one or both of the rings. The cups and cones on these hubs are as new as the day I've bought them since I changed this grease out once a year, plus swap out the BBs every 20-25k. I've done many of those hubs with the common Finish Line teflon grease on the ratchet rings, and the same brand Wet lube under the pawls. Chris King claims its system can handle up to three times the torque load of some competitors it’s tested. There are two types of springs currently in use; multiple small coil springs and single-circle clip springs. It’s got some tricky mechanical parts that are hidden away inside it, which will sometimes need a little tender loving care to keep them working well.

In theory, the larger number of ring-based contacts in a ratchet should be more reliable and transmit force better, although in practice pawl-based systems are well enough engineered that this is unlikely to be an issue if they’re maintained regularly.Chris King’s ratchet slides on angled splines in the hub rather than the straight in and out ones of DT Swiss’s hubs.

Removing the DT freehub requires no tools at all, you just pull off the end cap and the freehub slides off the axle. With most shimano and shimano clone freehubs, whatever lube is in the RH hub bearing ends up in the freehub body, provided it is fluid enough. I also like to check air pressures afterwards anyway to see how they change — observing these trends and tendencies over many years of racing has influenced how we set the bikes up for short races, too. It won’t hurt anything to ride it this way, but it will have more drag than quality chain lube would have and it’s quite a sticky substance so it attracts dirt. Often if you try and clean this area it just forces dirt into the gap and this means that noise-wise you can 'make things worse'.
