About this deal

The stories set in the present day – the warlord, the Greek doctor – are less convincing although I can understand why Hosseini doesn’t want to abandon Afghanistan to its past. Photograph: Massoud Hossaini/AFP/Getty Images The Band-e Amir lake in Afghanistan: 'Hosseini communicates a supple, conflicted and complex picture of his origin country. Manaar plays a crucial role in convincing Markos to become a doctor, as Markos develops a close bond with Manaar, but can’t save his life. Although his bestselling debut novel The Kite Runner (2003) and its follow-up A Thousand Splendid Suns (2009) were widely praised for their emotional intensity and storytelling sweep, many readers felt the endings of both books were jarringly contrived.

Its narrative wares are clearly advertised in the book-jacket blurb to reassure his tens of millions of worldwide readers that they will be getting the brand they want. Idris Bashiri, Timur Bashiri is an ambiguous character, since he’s seen entirely through the eyes of his cousin. She and Abdullah are portrayed as having an unusually close relationship during her early years, though she forgets him along with the rest of her biological family following her adoption. Markos has a conflicted relationship with his stern mother, Odelia, who takes good care of him but doesn’t show him any affection.
