About this deal

The same thing happens if you are running behind someone who is wearing a reflective detail on their clothes or pack. That said, if the budget is a major concern then the ACTIK remains a very solid choice for the all-round user. Out of curiosity, I tried hanging the SWIFT RL around my neck and found it surprisingly comfortable and pleasant as a way of directing a pool of light on the ground immediately in front and with reduced dazzle potential for any other trail user. Interestingly I was a bit indifferent about the IKO, but I think it's interesting what Petzl have done, drawing upon its design and technology, then applying it within a larger and more powerful headtorch. Focus on the ground close to you and then look up and into the distance and the sensor detects that you need more light and provides it pretty much seamlessly, it comes as a bit of shock when you realise that normal lights don’t do this.

With the NAO+ there is no need to compromise, with a highly respectable 350 lumens being possible over a time frame of 15-25hrs.

Robust and pretty powerful for their size, they're each a good solid choice for climbers and hillwalkers.

As the days get shorter, if you can't get out and run in the precious few hours of daily daylight, then a head torch is an essential purchase – along with some reflective gear and accessories to increase your visibility to drivers and other pedestrians. The reactive sensor also reacts to what you are looking at, whether a map close up or into the distance. Over the years I've seen some crazy figures quoted for headtorches, so it is nice to see that there's an independent body trying to standardise the industry's claims. And if you switch the light in a lit room, you can be tricked into thinking it’s not working because the the light simply doesn’t need to come on. But this rugged model has a lot more potential than that, with a balance of brightness and burn time that'd make it equally. The bottom line is that this a torch you can happily use for anything from gentle all-round walking and camping right through to technical night-time mountain running or mountaineering. As such, this should allay the fears of anyone looking to use the SWIFT RL through the colder and more miserable months of the year (which just happen to be the darker months of the year too). Since then there have been leaps and bounds of development, and we now have more choice of torches than ever before. It doesn't do this by distance, it does it courtesy of the in-built sensor which detects the level of ambient light bouncing back at it.

If you’re packing for a running adventure and are counting every gram, the Petzl Bindi comes into its own. Certainly bright, light and compact but battery life was definitely a concern in the cold when using the brightest settings, especially when skiing and hence not looking down as much. At first glance the Petzl Swift RL headtorch is immediately familiar, a compact style head torch consisting of a head strap, positionable body containing LEDs and battery pack, and a single control switch. The SWIFT RL balances the requirements of the climber, runner, skiier and mountaineer, with a good blend of flooding in the foreground and a strong, focussed beam giving you the distance too. However, I am usually out for a maximum of about two hours at night and that means I would prefer to have a brighter, steady beam rather than relying on the reactive mode.
