The writing style seemed very blunt. I was always aware I was reading a book instead of being told a story, if that makes sense. The witches live rent free for nearly 300 years till their landlord: a handsome, quirky, blonde, boyish lawyer Josh who recently inherited a dilapidated mansion, deciding to meet with his tenants for collecting the debts! I also felt frustrated by the disastrous use of magic. Even as things went terribly wrong, Sarah was still devoted to trying it again and again. I did not feel any of the mishaps were funny and simply felt the narrator was behaving irresponsibly. Josh follows Essie to her house and meet the eccentric tenants but interestingly he’s strong enough not to forget things he’s seen. A witch will die here in the morning. It is the 4th of December 1591. On this, the last night of her life in a prison cell several floors below Edinburgh’s High Street, convicted witch Geillis Duncan receives a mysterious visitor – Iris, who says she comes from a future where women are still killed for who they are and what they believe. As the hours pass and dawn approaches, Geillis recounts the circumstances of her arrest, brutal torture, confession and trial, while Iris offers support, solace – and the tantalising prospect of escape.

When some of the teenagers become frustrated with living under such strict regulations, they start acting out towards the ghost. Their cruel actions ultimately cause all hell to break loose.

I can’t say much else without spoiling any of the plot but I have to say it was definitely a wildly entertaining experience.

From the blurb, I was prepared (and very much all) for the fun and the flirting - which Essie and Josh delivered in spades! But I got so much more witchy-ness than I was expecting. There was the usual magic and mayhem but amongst the curses and concealments, were small nods to actual witchcraft history and with it's nod to a real life Witchfinder, the storyline was both fascinating and enchanting. Essie had this alternative, quirky, long hair and dungarees thing going on, sort of “I’m not like other girls” but not exactly, and it worked great on her. Josh was a good guy and that was his main trait; definitely not an alpha male which on one hand was refreshing but on the other… I need my book boyfriends a little more defined and maybe a teeny tiny bit alpha- ish? 🫣Trata de eso el libro y sus reflexiones. And so did the scary aspects of the novel. If you consider something ridiculous, how can you be scared of it?

La novela es espectacular. Y no son palabras mayores. El libro es terror sobrenatural pero contiene lo que para mí es la literatura, un intento de mezclar varias cosas para que el final consigas un mensaje en medio de todo y aquí eso se ve a leguas en la segunda parte, justo en los últimos capítulos. Hex es un estudio sociológico de como actuaría el ser humano ante una situación que se les sale de las manos, que le es incomprensible y no puede ser explicado por ninguna rama del estudio. Aquello que queda fuera de todo control humano.
