About this deal

There are other types of portable smoke generators available on the market too, which are basically modified vape smoking units that use a battery to heat a replaceable coil to vapourize the fluid. These small smoke systems are primarily used for photography work and actually came into existence through the cosplay and film prop communities. Just filled up our workshop. Could hardly see the overhead lights. Our ‘professional’ fireman is well impressed as am I." In FOG mode, the SmokeNINJA creates a dense, slow-moving fog with lots of details. It’s the type of smoke that stays really long in the air. In FOG mode, the SmokeNINJA makes the same volume of smoke as SmokeGENIE on MAX POWER settings. It can go for 60 seconds at a time, with a full tank lasting for 15 minutes. Dry Ice effect Smoke machines provide an issue that isn't a problem for LED lighting fixtures, and that is high current draw both in idle and during smoke production. PMI also claims that it is far less harmful than what is typically used in the industry. Instead of using harmful chemicals, the team chose a glycerin-based solution that smells “pleasant” and is non-toxic. When asked about the safety of glycerin smoke, Chow tells PetaPixel that while it has not been tested specifically for vaping, it has been tested extensively for theatrical use.

air flow tracing / visualisation, LEV (local exhaust ventilation) tests, small scale leak detection Some have even taken to smoke machines as Christmas décor by adding a magical layer of smoke to their wintry scene. 3. CostumesThe directional release of the smoke may work for certain things, such as perhaps using it to add extra effect to images where the subject is smoking, or for certain food shots where a stronger smoke cloud may emphasize the hot temperature of a meal. However, I generally found it to work better for my style of photography by filling my chosen area (indoors) with the smoke several times, and then releasing it once more as I am shooting to create a cloud of mystery and haze. The original Smoke Genie has a menu with the ability to fine-tune the control of the machine. While you could get quite a bit of granularity with this setup, you’d probably default to one of three smoke types. The Smoke Ninja has those three smoke types. You’d typically use each with a customized nozzle. Unline the deep menu of the SmokeGENIE, each mode has a dedicated, easy to operate button: Fog Aside from the preset buttons on the device, there is a new “health bar” that shows how long smoke you have left for a certain operation. The bar slowly drop when you create smoke and grows when you let the machine rest.

Battery powered smoke machines operate similarly to mains powered smoke machines. They use a pump to pull a water and glycol mixed fluid from a reservoir. This fluid then passes through a heat exchanger, transforming it from a liquid into a vapor. The vapor is then released through a nozzle. According to PMI Gear, the new model can be operated with one hand and will have a wireless remote. It also has a magnetic and a quarter-inch mounts, making it possible to attach the tool to metal surfaces or to an extending pole. Using USB-C fast-charging will give users 30 minutes of continuous smoke output from a two-hour charge, though the SmokeNinja can only provide 15 minutes of run time on a full tank. It’s also possible to swap out both the chamber and the 18650 battery. Portable smoke machines aren’t only great for events, these battery powered have found great utility for decorative purposes as well. Particularly, they’re great for decorating outdoor spaces – which are areas that were traditionally off-limits for smoke machines which relied on a cord.

SmokeGENIE Aims to a Safer Option for Smoke

With the conversion of effects lighting from high wattage incandescent lamps to the low current draw of LED technology, the power required to run an effects lighting unit has dropped significantly in the last few years, with the efficiency of LEDs both in operating current and heat loss meaning battery power became a design option for the first time. We certainly would not recommend our user to directly inhale the smoke from the machine, as this is not what we built the machine for. But according to our research, glycerin smoke actually would be a safer choice compares to traditional fog machines,” he concludes. See the SmokeGENIE in Action One may argue that the amount of smoke released may not be sufficiently enough to create a bigger scene (or would require several MicroFoggers used at the same time), however, understandably so due to health and safety issues, MicroFogger is limited to release the smoke of up to ten seconds. After that, you let it cool for a brief moment before you can use it again. This is not necessarily a criticism as such, but rather to point out that if you’re looking for something on a more grand scale, you may want to consider more powerful smoke machines. If you’re using it on a shoot, you don’t have to worry about turning it off and on all the time, you can simply put it down and it’ll go in a sleep mode automatically. I didn’t realize this at first until two days later when I found my MicroFogger to be still in the sleep mode instead of turned off! When you’re done using it on the day, simple press the main button five times and the screen will indicate that it’s turned off.

Smoke machines are usually advertised with their wattage rating as the main selling point, which is actually the heat exchangers' power requirements when at operating temperature. It's basically a case of the larger the heater, the more smoke it can produce, with a 500W smoke machine being the lowest power you really would go for decent coverage. With fog machines, it's usually a case of bigger is better. During proper operation, the fog produced is considered to be non-toxic but we do not recommend breathing it in anyway. The smoke can only become toxic if the safety precautions regarding the replacement of worn-out heating coils are not followed (this information will be published in the instruction manual). Also, according to PMI, their smoke is tested to be 100% SAFE by SGS, and the smoke generation system (machine and liquid) is approved by the Actor’s Equity Association USA for the well-being of actors. (We’ve seen other ways to generate smoke before). Price and availabilityJust a few years ago you would have been using single-use Alkaline batteries (AA/C-cell /D-cell) to power anything that was ‘portable’, from torches and power tools to boombox radios and cordless home telephones just to name a few examples.

Our fog liquid consists of a high purity vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol mixture. These are commonly-available chemicals and may be found in local vape shops as base liquids for electronic cigarettes. Yes, the usb charging port also doubles as a signal input which allows you to trigger the MicroFogger using an Arduino or other micro controller of your choice, simply short the two middle usb pins using a relay. To enable this functionality, you’ll first need to activate the appropriate solder jumper on the MicroFogger’s PCB. This is detailed in the instruction manual. I’ve never really been very keen on various photography gadgets but I was quite excited to test out MicroFogger, a compact smoke machine sold by Workshop Science, to see how would I implement it in my style of photography. As someone who photographs primarily people, this was a fun experiment! Steam is the type of smoke that looks like boiling steam rising from a hot plate or a teapot. The SmokeNINJA has a Simple interface

Besides the form factor, the SmokeGenie and the SmokeNinja differ in operation. In addition to having more settings, the SmokeGenie could release smoke for more than 10 minutes. Meanwhile, the SmokeNinja will give you just one minute of continuous smoke, which is also indicated by a light bar as time runs out. That might be fine as users can time smoke releases with camera snaps, but it feels onerous to have to keep restarting the device during a shoot. Both portable fog machines use the same coil, which PMI says can provide 100 hours of smoke. It's much cheaper and cleaner, is non-toxic and completely biodegradable. It also has the huge benefit of not leaving a greasy film on everything it settles on, something oil based machines like to do. Unfortunately not. The MicroFogger produces smoke through the evaporation of a fog liquid so it can only be white, adding a dye to the liquid will not change this. The only way to simulate colored smoke using the MicroFogger would be to light up the white smoke using some external lights. Liquids from other fog machines are usually far less viscous than our composition so if used in the MicroFogger, they are unlikely to produce any smoke. We can only guarantee the safety and performance of the fog liquid that we sell so if you decide to experiment with other compositions, this would at your own risk.
