About this deal

If you park in a disabled bay and you don't have a Blue Badge displayed, you could get a fixed penalty notice. Wright explains:"The key design principle is that yellow boxes should be no bigger than is necessary to prevent vehicles obstructing through movements.

Some people might assume restrictions on parking around busier routes don't apply on a bank holiday since the usual traffic of people won’t be there. Watch out for different rules and restrictions when there's big sporting events, festivals like Glastonbury or a big concert. You can usually stop to drop off or pick up passengers unless signs say otherwise or there are small yellow lines marked on the pavement at right angles to its edge. It can be a little confusing to work out what the difference is between 'no stopping' and 'no parking'.I think designers should have to take a car out in rush hour to see if they can negotiate the box without stopping, before insisting that others do the same. There is an exception - if you want to turn right, you are allowed to enter the box and wait if you’re prevented from turning by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right. Under the rules of the Highway Code, you’re not allowed to enter the yellow box unless your exit is clear and there is enough space on the other side of the junction for your car to clear the box completely without stopping. The situation can be compounded by crossings and stop lines set back which make it even more difficult for drivers to see whether there is space to make it through the junction in one go as they are further away to start with.

To date, only local authorities in London and Cardiff – and elsewhere the police – have had the power to issue penalty charge notices for these infringements. The second main condition is that drivers should have adequate visibility beyond the box to be able to make a clear judgement before entering it. Design flaws include junctions that have been installed in completely the wrong places, boxes that are larger than they should be and ones where buildings or street furniture obstruct drivers from seeing where boxes end, making it impossible to assess whether there is enough space beyond the junction for their vehicle to fit into. They're purpose built to provide parking spaces that are more secure, usually monitored by CCTV and in a good location for local amenities.

The RAC believes these figures demonstrate how lucrative box junction enforcement can be for councils as well as how important it is to update the guidance properly when these powers are extended to councils across the rest of England. RAC Motoring Services and RAC Financial Services Limited are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority in respect of insurance mediation activities. If there aren't any signs to restrict parking, you can park on a residential street as long as you follow all the other rules about yellow lines, double yellow lines and white lines. There may be a private company enforcing the parking rules which can issue a fine (a parking charge notice) or you might be asked to move your car. Breakdown cover arranged and administered by RAC Financial Services Limited (Registered No 05171817) and provided by RAC Motoring Services (Registered No 01424399) and/or RAC Insurance Ltd (Registered No 2355834).

The Blue Badge Scheme specifies how many disabled parking spaces a council needs to provide in council car parks or on-street. They are not designed for, and serve no purpose in, situations where vehicles are travelling in the same direction. Single red lines mean you can’t park, stop or load during specified time periods that should be displayed clearly on surrounding signs. You usually have 28 days to pay, but if you pay within the first 14 days the amount can drop by 50%.

That means you need to live in the area, pay for a permit and display it in your vehicle to park there. Sam Wright,Chartered engineer, formally responsible for the design and approval of yellow boxes on the TfL Road Network, discusses ifyellow box junctions enforced unfairly?which looks at ‘Suitability’, is more helpful: ‘Experience has shown that the marking improves traffic flow where previously there were delays due to vehicles blocking the junction and impeding the cross flow. In London, many box junctions have cameras in place, and you could be fined if you’re caught using the box incorrectly. In some cases, the single white line is there to indicate that there’s no pavement – if this is the case then it’s illegal to park there.
