Initially, I wasn't 100% on board with the premise of this manga: a child named Thorfinn raised by the rival Viking tribe that murdered his father, working towards his goal of killing their leader.

We run into Askeladd, Thorfinn and many of the other major characters participating in an attack on a Frankish fortification.It just happened to catch my eye when I was cruising my local library seinen (older male) manga shelves, and I picked it up without even glancing at the premise. Along with the high praise towards the show, as well as its source material, it has been compared to Kentaro Miura’s Berserk, particularly in its depiction of barbaric violence. Canute's guards refuse to let him through, as only a member of Ketil's family can surrender or negotiate and they do not believe he was once temporarily one of Canute’s bodyguards. Although he learns the messenger who wants to see him is Thorfinn, son of Thors, Canute declines to meet with him.

The drawings are top notch and the emotions and all the drama involved is transmitted in a natural way with some over the tops scenes as expected, but the background events are very serious and dramatic. Yuya, one half of the boy pop duo ZINGS, may be the laziest performer in the Japanese music industry. It has all the hallmarks of an epic Japanese manga, but it is set in the time of the Viking invasions of England.As a child, Thorfinn sat at the feet of the great Leif Ericson and thrilled to wild tales of a land far to the west. A manga written and drawn by Yukimura Makoto, and an Anime animated by Wit Studio (S1) and MAPPA (S2)! For one thing the art is a MASTERPIECE, and if you’re even a halfway decent manga/art fan, heck even if you’ve never even heard of manga (Japanese comics), this series is a must.
