Crisp and colour rich, the Toshiba UK31 makes a good bright room flatscreen and looks its best with brightly lit daytime TV, news and animation. The far-field microphone on the device recognised prompts to increase or decrease the volume, but wouldn’t respond to muting the audio. The scene where Steve Rogers infiltrates the Lumerian Star is rendered too dim to spot any shadow detail or detail in general. It won’t win any beauty prizes and doesn’t have Disney+ but if you want an all-rounder with an admirable Game performance, it’s difficult to beat for the cash. It’s noticeable, too, how the Dolby Atmos decoder locks dialogue to the screen, while projecting at least a semblance of a three-dimensional soundstage behind it and slightly to the sides.
Brightness is compromised with all three options, although Dynamic produces the best black performance at the cost of detail. TRU Micro Dimming TRU Micro Dimming improves contrast, focussing on all the different regions of the image. Dark scenes are too grey for serious film fans, perhaps, but for its money, or as a second room TV, it’s a really good bet – and the best TV to wear a Toshiba badge we’ve seen for years. This direct LED backlit panel isn’t particularly thin, but viewed square on that’s hardly going to be an issue. Upscaling of 1080p content is reasonable enough, but drop below that and things start to go awry, with images that lack detail and sharpness.Used to determine a user's inclusion in an experiment and the expiry of experiments a user has been included in.
The panel is also a VA type rather than an IPS type, which again usually results in better contrast (albeit at the expense of comparatively limited viewing angles). However, we weren’t taken by its build quality, nor its disappointing contrast ratio and screen uniformity. If wall-mounting is not a consideration (or feasible) there’s the stand to deal, which while easy to screw in, is surprisingly heavy and brings the TV’s profile down low.The two down-firing speakers fail to properly capture the thud of a bear’s paw hitting the ground, the higher-pitched smashing of glass or the sudden rush of a gun shot, with bass performance similarly disappointing. The screen is framed by a gloss black plastic bezel that’s not particularly thin and has a matching central pedestal stand.
It’s large and sensibly laid out, with quick access buttons to Prime Video, Netflix and Freeview Play. Like the UK31, the UL21 uses the Linux-based Toshiba Smart Portal, and supports the HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision HDR formats. The really startling thing about the 50UK3163DB’s HDR performance is that as well as delivering bright HDR shots with an impressively high level of baseline brightness, it still has enough brightness headroom to shift up another gear for the sort of ultra-intense highlights that really make HDR shine.As Trinity escapes the agents in the opening scene, the Tru Flow conducts its work in a stable manner – aside from some blurriness, judder and the slight unreality motion often presents, it’s a smooth performer. By default, the Energy Saving mode is set to Maximum, which results in images looking particularly dull. These Google reCAPTCHA Cookies (JAR-SSID) apply on Help Center pages if sign-ins are enabled, and with respect to submitting tickets, if enabled. Even better, Toshiba’s set manages to resolve subtle colour tone information during very dark scenes better than some TVs costing significantly more.
