A: I had to go back through my files to figure out when I first started this book, and I was surprised to see that I wrote the first iteration during NaNoWriMo in 2014!

Sure, I’d stalked her social media, watching as her beauty editor job had earned her a blue check mark. The Writing Retreat is a psychological thriller about a famous author who invites five up and coming female novelists to her home in the Adirondacks for a month-long writing retreat. That was the way of the world: if you were a woman, then you had a job to do, and that was to pretend to love everyone else walking all over your body, leaving imprints on your face. I’d redone my makeup before leaving work, adding extra eyeliner and lipstick, but I worried it only made me look false and weird.

Especially last third of the book was so much extra bleak with shocking twists and epic revelations.

The dynamics are constantly in flux partly because peoples heads are being messed with ranging from situations of let’s all play nice to drops or bucket loads of poison. This book has flaws (I'll discuss more below), but I can't help appreciate how the author went for it with the ultimate track the plot took- I wondered if she was going to Go There and she did.In The Writing Retreat Julia Bartz captures the hunger to have our stories told and the desperate measures some will take to cut through the noise. At the same time, however, I was totally consumed by finding out what was going to happen to each of them by the end of the book. Even, the fact that Wren, her former best friend, and current rival, will be there, won’t stop her from accepting.S. Geological Survey, leading to “immediate suspension of the National Volcano Early Warning System,” and there’s always someone around looking to monetize the natural disaster and the sasquatch-y onslaught that follows. THE WRITING RETREAT is a sexy, thrilling, compulsive mediation on art and competition amongst women who ought to be sisters, only something malignant gets in the way. It reminded me of early days with Wren, holding hands as we rode out to Bushwick, wearing cheap pleather leggings, swigging from a shared plastic bottle of vodka and soda. In the US, there is such a focus on becoming rich and famous—those are two ideals that are pushed on us all the time. The girl, presumed dead, sparks another chain of events that leads this novel down an extremely thrilling and wild ride.

and went in blind figuring a writing retreat that looked eerie, set in the winter, easy locked room popcorn thriller to chase away the winter blues.

She responded almost immediately, and we started a spate of witty exchanges that I spent much more time and energy on than my actual job.
