About this deal

He discovered signs of an earlier culture, now known to be the Dorset people, who had inhabited the island from around 500 BCE before abandoning it due to a change in the climate that saw temperatures increase. The illustrations are interesting, if not exactly memorable, and they do what they are supposed to do.

Written by Terry Jones, most famous for his membership of the Monty Python team, this is a wonderful tale, expertly spun, which won the Children’s Book Award.

The saga is a bit fuzzy on the details, but suffice to say that the result was another bloody battle in which several people were killed.

Told, as in the real sagas, in very episodic form, this is the adventure of Erik and his crew on the Golden Dragon as they travel the world taking on deceitful trolls, Dogfighters (your actual dogs of war), mystical mountains and go on to adventures at the edge pf the world and outwit The Old Man of The Sea. While a similar look worked for The Holy Grail, without the charm and alchemy of the familiar Python actors it's just unpleasant. Odin persuades Fenrir to spit out the sun, but tells Erik that the end of Ragnarök will not bring peace to the world. Then, in a stroke of marketing trickery worthy of modern-day corporations, Erik decided to name the land he discovered “Greenland,”– even though most of it was covered by an ice sheet – believing that an appealing name would attract more settlers. According to CCSU, some runners up through 2002 were Commended (from 1959) or Highly Commended (from 1974).

We had just visited an exhibition of Vikings in the British Museum, so I asked him if he would like a story about Vikings and he said yes. This temperature increase conflicted with the Dorset people’s hunting methods, but made Greenland's west coast a viable alternative for Norse farmers from Iceland. This is Terry Jones attempt at telling Viking sagas in the way that he hoped they would be, full of adventure and excitement. On the other hand, I'm glad that we just happened to be reading this book when my son was encountering gendered teasing for his long hair at school.A handful of jokes land but on the whole, Erik is best left to see out his days in Valhalla, undisturbed by new viewers. Erik the Red remained a leading chieftain in Greenland throughout his life, owning the farms at Brattahlid in the Eastern Settlement and Sandnes in the Western Settlement. As one reviewer commented about their last book, Fairy Tales, ‘The Brothers Grimm and Marx together could not have done better. In ERIK THE VIKING, our hero, Erik ( Tim Robbins) is tired of the Viking ways, so sets out on a fantastic quest to end the age of Ragnarok and bring about a more peaceful and humane way of life. During one of their romantic encounters, Erik hides from Arnulf using Aud's magic cloak of invisibility.
