About this deal

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane is charming tale of personal growth, in which author Kate DiCamillo toys with our emotions as we slowly fall in love with her flawed central character. As he learns the story of each of the people who save him, Edward begins to understand the complex relationship between love and loss.

What charmed me about this book was having it read to me in 20 minute segments at night by one of my grand children. I have included most of the resources required for the unit along with an extensive notebook file and session plans. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane is Guided Reading Level U and is appropriate for 3-5th grade readers. Her word choice and sentence fluency found its way into my writing lesson plans to illustrate some of the possibilities waiting to be found in words.Kate DiCamillo takes us on an extraordinary journey, from the depths of the ocean to the net of a fisherman, from the top of a garbage heap to the fireside of a hoboes' camp, from the bedside of an ailing child to the bustling streets of Memphis.

Edward, over the course of his adventures, learns what love is about, and as he fell in love with all his many owners, I fell in love with him and his story. The reader travels with a china rabbit named Edward Tulane through, as the synopsis states, "the depths of the ocean to the net of a fisherman, from the bedside of an ailing child to the bustling streets of Memphis". Kate DiCamillo, the newly named National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature for 2014–2015, says about stories, “When we read together, we connect. The rabbit was very pleased with himself, and for good reason: he was owned by a girl named Abilene, who adored him completely. For advanced readers, the notebook prompts can be used to generate a longer, more detailed response to the daily prompt.Pre-cueing vocabulary will aid comprehension and gives children an opportunity to reinforce reading skills. Soon after, while on a cruise ship, Edward is thrown overboard by some mean boys, thus beginning an odyssey that carries him through many years to different owners, through humiliation and damage and pain, but enables him gradually to open his heart to others.

This is the story tells the tale of a small china rabbit who was made as a toy for a child in a wealthy family. Edward is passed from hand to hand of a succession of life-altering characters, such as a hobo and his dog and a four-year-old girl with tuberculosis and her brother.

After plenty of opportunities to practice, perform the endings and decide which ending is most fitting. Edward wonders why he ever loved any of these people, if they are only going to leave him in the ocean, in the garbage, bruised, battered, and broken.
