My one star indicates that I am not the intended audience, and I do not appreciate the pretty, trapped wife for whom infidelity is actually a noble act, nor the conveniently awful husband whom she would be right to cheat, or that rich people are predictably the boring and evil people and that the poor guy is OBVIOUSLY the better bet and that beauty is as strong an indicator of heroism as, say, actions (actually it is a better one), and that lust is the same as love if not more powerful and timeless. Ella, our heroine is just as broken as our hero, she’s lost her entire family, her brother and as if she hasn’t been through enough already, she’s dealt yet another blow that could devastate her entire world. But as it turns out, this is really two novels: a fairly pedestrian one about a love affair in 1960 and a more engaging sequel forty years later.The story comes full circle when Ellie confronts Anthony O'Hare in the library, with his letters to Jennifer in hand. Moved (and hoping to get a juicy news story out of it), Ellie and her new friend Rory (Rizwan) set out to piece together this romantic love story. The Last Letter From Your Lover evoked feelings of sadness, both hopefulness and hopelessness, nostalgia and a yearning hunger for a love letter of my own. Overcome by guilt, and the thought that he is gone forever, she stays with Laurence for the next four years.

Explaining the rationale behind some of those changes, Moyes explains: "Well, the main thing is, when I originally wrote this book 13 years ago, there were no dating apps, the whole dating landscape has completely changed since then. Actors Shailene Woodley and Felicity Jones play the respective women who must each face matters of the heart after the love letters are found. The cast is led by Rogue One and The Theory of Everything star Felicity Jones, who plays journalist Ellie in the modern-day timeline.That is why is it so poignant to see them both make the active choice to reunite many years later and create an imaginary happy ending to bandage over all of the time they spent apart. Sexiness less so, with Jones and Rizwan not quite able to summon the smouldering chemistry of Woodley and Turner.

Any "Author Information" displayed below reflects the author's biography at the time this particular book was published. Through a letter, Anthony suggests to Jennifer that if she really wants to begin a romantic relationship, she should meet him in a secluded park — a meeting spot that will be pivotal at the end of the movie. Theses ideas teased at the very start of the movie with a title card featuring a single quote from Ernest Hemingway's 1929 novel "A Farewell to Arms," which reads, "Why darling, I don't live at all when I'm not with you. The author actually wrote this before her bestselling ‘Me Before You’ and the movie of the same name. to have someone out there who understands you, who desires you, who sees you as a better version of yourself, is the most astonishing gift.Immaculately paced, genuinely touching and stuffed with Mad Men-esque period details, it's a page-turner that loves words themselves. And most important to Moyes was that the spirit of the novel stayed the same – she says she was perfectly happy for substantive changes to be made so long as they did not interfere with the essence of her original work.
