About this deal

At first I thought this would be the same as the In Conversation featurette that is available on Netflix, and while this uses a lot of the same material, it’s a different edit with some alternate material as well (and it runs a few minutes shorter). A comical aside about two gangsters named “Whispers” (“the other one,” Sheeran keeps repeating as if he were in an Abbott and Costello routine) would slot quite comfortably into that earlier film. It's those foundations and that commitment that make Scorsese's movies - and The Irishman in particular -so special.

The ultimate tragedy of The Irishman is that Sheeran is incapable of singing his song of self with the kind of unblinking honesty that might lead him through regret and toward redemption. The Irishman is based on the aged Sheeran's account of the killing and memories of his close relationships with Hoffa and Bufalino, but who knows how much of it is really true. track, but this Criterion edition ups the ante a bit by including the film's original Dolby Atmos track, which, according to the liner notes, was remastered from the digital master audio files. Theatrical Trailer and Teaser(HD, 4 minutes) - The film's original preview and a teaser that's really more of a trailer complete the extras package. Though not all that long I will say it does a decent job getting into how the technology works (starting with these special cameras that also get mentioned a lot in the previous two supplements) and then how they had to properly capture a variety of expressions from the actors to make sure they could replicate their performances as exact as they could.Split-screen shots show the striking transformations of the actors and myriad computer images provide glimpses of the meticulous methodology used to create this latest form of movie magic.

A roundtable conversation over drinks with Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci, which was available on Netflix last year, is mostly predicated on the correct assumption that audiences want to hang out with these legends, offering little new information about the making of The Irishman. The notes state that digital cameras were used where de-aging effects were applied, but even then there is a nice photographic look to the image most of the time. The Irishman premiered on Netflix a year ago in 4K Dolby Vision, and most home video enthusiasts (count me among them) hoped a 4K UHD disc would be part of the package when the film debuted on physical media. I found motion and that to be better here, and at times, when comparing to the high-def stream on Netflix, I thought some textures—like a leather jacket De Niro wears early on—looked better here as well.A beautiful transfer, excellent Dolby Atmos audio, and healthy array of supplements distinguish Criterion's Blu-ray presentation, which is well worth owning until a 4K UHD release comes along. In reality, Sheeran told his life story to author and former investigator Charles Brandt for the 2004 memoir I Heard You Paint Houses, which is the basis for the film’s screenplay by Steven Zaillian. Though I could look past a lot of them there are issues around the effects in the end product, yet despite that I still found it a fascinating look into not only the technology but the art that went behind it.
