About this deal

There is so much to love about this novel and I highly recommend it to all who crave heartfelt, touching stories that sweep you away to a gentler, kinder place. I just loved the family unit that they all built up and it was all thanks to Mary Kate using the money to do good not only for herself but for so many others.

The Irish Boarding House” by Sandy Taylor – Book Review “The Irish Boarding House” by Sandy Taylor – Book Review

Mary-Kate and her family lacked in many things, but they had love and I think this saw them through many a dark time. In fact, it was the total opposite and I was pleasantly surprised by how engrossed I became in everything.Suddenly she is catapulted into wealth and decides to open a boarding house with a caring ethos which attracts women in need. Suddenly, she inherits a large sum of money, which changes her life and a lot of other people besides. The stern older woman won’t speak about her past, but when Mary Kate uncovers her story, it reveals a devastating secret about her mother.

Sandy Taylor (Author of The Irish Boarding House) - Goodreads

We are being encouraged not only to observe but to experience Mrs Mooney’s hurried, no-nonsense train of thought as she sets about deciding what to do about her daughter’s ‘sin’.

The story was scattered with random people and plots being introduced without any purpose or resolution. I read a lot of heavy historical fiction, so sweet and saccharine every now and then is a nice change.

Summary and Analysis of James Joyce’s ‘The Boarding House’ A Summary and Analysis of James Joyce’s ‘The Boarding House’

The stories of a number of women occupying the eponymous Irish boarding house are simple and heartwarming, and, though I prefer more insight into the inner lives and motivations of characters, and greater differentiation through the characterization of individuals in a story, I feel that the reader will enjoy this easy read and come away feeling a warm glow at the satisfactory resolutions of the characters' problems. She has a steady stream of lodgers staying with her, especially men from Liverpool and the Isle of Man, and is known by many of her guests as The Madam on account of her imposing figure (and manner). The boarding house brings Mary Kate love and friendships she never dreamed of, but just as her heart is about to burst with joy, a new guest arrives. When the project is complete, many wayward and wronged souls find their way to her bright red door where hope and healing awaits.

Those stories—“The Sisters,” “Eveline,” and “After the Race”—were the first stories written for the collection that would become Dubliners. In his later novels, such as Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, Joyce would pioneer a boldly experimental style, often using stream-of-consciousness narration, much like his contemporaries Virginia Woolf (in books such as Mrs. She grows up in a poor side of town carrying for her beloved grandparents but when they sadly die she has to leave the only home she had known. And would the new guest - one that puzzled Mary Kate - uncover more secrets or just be passing through? If you're looking for something that is super low stakes and just fills your heart with gooey hope and joy, this is that book.
