There would have been more merit in a shorter and more tightly focused book which held up the actual historical Churchill to the romanticised patriot imagined in the 1980s. He was often disparaged for his strategy against the Axis—particularly in 1942 after the disaster in the Far East, with the fall in February of Singapore, which Churchill had regarded as an impenetrable fortress.

The opening chapter for example explicitly invokes the Extinction Rebellion protests, Black Lives Matter, and other movements beside. He wanted white settlers to flood Kenya and hold power over the black majority, as they did in Rhodesia and South Africa. One of Johnson’s most insightful criticisms of Churchill is that the man had ‘fewer notches on his bedpost than you might expect from a man whose appetites…were generally so titanic’. Ali reminds us that, before appeasement had a bad name, Churchill was, in fact, something of an appeaser. He said the colonial authorities were using “methods of barbarism”, which they were in having concentration camps for Boer women and children: this is not remotely the same thing.

Even today, Boris Johnson in his failing attempts to be magisterial, has adopted many of his hero's mannerism! He is joined by Robert Oulds of the Bruges Group who criticises Ali for misusing the freedoms that he owes to Churchill winning the Second World War and of ‘murdering rather than learning from the past’.

Instead, they want to discredit the book and its author, that goes without saying, but also to use it to rally the troops for the culture wars.
