The project was made to show off the versatility while also trying to convey the loss of one’s self when they become obsessed with something. The author has also briefly touched upon the existence of superstitions and the kind of effect they can have on people. Classical poems often refer to willow in this way and it is repeated in art with Ophelia drowning herself near a willow. I suspect that as I get more comfortable with gouache, my process will begin to more closely resemble what I do in oils, but maybe not.

It is not known why there is this link but there are many theories, from yews being planted over the graves of plague victims to protect and purify the dead, to the more mundane in that yews could be planted in churchyards as it was one of the only places that cattle did not have access and therefore would not be poisoned by eating the leaves. As I built the piece up, I continued to glaze in the darks and then tighten things that I felt needed to be kept crisp, while allowing the softening to happen elsewhere. And even if that's what it took to get them, that's a lot of extra space if I only want to add a few more environments. Regardless, it’s been a fun ride, and I appreciate everyone who’s reached out and shared their own experiences and wisdom with gouache in the comments. The book is more for children in the teens and such and it will appeal to their idea of fantasy and magic. The initial problem is that you kind of go a while without really knowing what the premise is, what the story is.

Not being a regular reader of fantasy novels there were elements of the story that I struggled to picture, but maybe that’s just my cynical twenty-something self talking and if I was younger I wouldn’t have this problem at all. Still, people who identify as modern Druids continue to gather at the monument for the summer solstice, winter solstice, spring equinox and autumn equinox.

What I’m still unclear on is the level of forgiveness the medium has for revision and reworking (which is something that has been known to happen with my assignments), and so I’m going to build that into my next piece.
