About this deal

While I love everything Luke puts his musical stamp on, this track gives me a new appreciation for his talent and abilities behind a fretboard and microphone. The group has virtual livestream performances and eventual live concerts planned for 2020 and 2021, with John Pierce on bass guitar, Robert "Sput" Searight on drums, Steve Maggiora on keyboards, Dominique "Xavier" Taplin on keyboards, and Warren Ham providing additional vocals. As far as his solo endeavours go, Bridges is his ninth studio effort, following on from the magnificent I Found The Sun Again in 2021. The guitar started out with only MusicMan specifications (including a Floyd Rose locking vibrato, later replaced with a vintage-style fulcrum bridge), but in 1998, the manufacturer made several customizations to the model to better fit Lukather's playing style.

Luke reflects, “It’s funny…when he was born 35 years ago, I looked into his eyes before I cut the cord and said to myself, ‘I wonder IF he will follow in my footsteps? It’s one of those typical and emotion-filled ballads that Steve pulls together love the vocals on this one, supported by a steady running of the keys and characteristic crisp guitar playing. Disc closer “I’ll Never Know” takes us out with a slightly different sound and feel than some of the other tracks on the collection, but also shows hints music not necessarily aligned with Steve… I pick up hints of Pink Floyd-ish glimmers within the chorus that add something new to the disc and body of work.He also denoted that this version includes "one of the greatest piano solos" that he's heard of in his life by Jeff Babko, and that David Paich plays a great " Steve Winwood organ solo".

The resulting album, No Substitutions: Live in Osaka, won a 2001 Grammy award for Best Pop Instrumental Album.Well-versed in music theory, Lukather can follow chord charts and changes in a way typical of jazz musicians—this ability enhances his value as a session musician. As the album opens with Far From Over, listeners are first greeted with sound effects that can only be described as an interesting crossover between sci-fi and everyday life before it shifts into an alternative rock track. In 2005, Lukather won critical praise for his rendition of the Jimi Hendrix song " Little Wing" at a gala 90th birthday celebration for jazz guitarist Les Paul. Their repertoire has 3 BILLION+ streams at Spotify alone, with “Africa” counting for one billion plays on its own. For example, Not My Kind Of People has such potential to be a cool grungy rock song with guitar riffs and vocals to match, yet the remainder of song feels slightly mediocre in comparison. Alongside his tenure as the only member of ToTo to never take a hiatus from the band, he has performed on thousands of albums as a session musician. Lukather's ninth solo album features a host of other Toto alumni (singer Joseph Williams and keyboard player David Paich wrote the majority of the record), so naturally this is as classy and fabulous as Joan Collins necking a Cinzano with Leonard Rossiter.

Lukather wrote the songs for the album in a hotel room with his son and a handful of other musicians, using basic equipment. Music Man also produces a Ball Family Reserve Steve Lukather Model that features an alder body with a mahogany "tone block" inlaid under the pickups, capped with a figured maple top and transparent finish. Being a massive Beatles fan and, of course, a longtime member of Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band, it’s no surprise to hear a track of wonderful simplicity like the free-flowing When I See You Again, no bells and whistles, just addictive shoots of melody. Toto went through several lead vocalists over the years, including Bobby Kimball, Fergie Frederiksen, and Joseph Williams. Lukather has said that the album "changed his life" and that he was greatly influenced by the guitar playing of George Harrison in particular.
