About this deal

It poured around him thick and steady, binding all together: the long patient strength of the trees that anchored, the deep bright power of the handful of dryads—Tobias felt Bramble clear as day among them, young and strong—and then the small and necessary, the bracken and ferns, the mosses and mushrooms.

Silver in the Wood (The Greenhollow Duology Book 1) Kindle

However, the foxtrot pacing feels off - sloooow sloooow quick quick - and the resolution comes too quickly and neatly. His past is a delicate and best-forgotten topic; his present is occupied with the caretaking of the woods, which become a perilous place for humans in the summer. The growing relationship between Silver and Tobias is lightly drawn, but lovely nonetheless – reluctant friends to lovers is perhaps the best description, and I adore the pairing of a grumpy, laconic hero with a charming and verbose one. You need just a right amount of story and plot that is both large and small enough to inhabit the short-ish length, and just enough exposition to create, but not overwhelm the atmosphere.Tobias, tethered to the forest, does not dwell on his past life, but he lives a perfectly unremarkable existence with his cottage, his cat, and his dryads. Some of us frequently check ahead to the last page to make sure of this, even though we know that this is a cardinal sin against both books and their authors, but we do it anyway because we can’t enjoy the book unless we know that everyone is alright. But the world around Tobias’ wood keeps going, with the alternate-world Industrial Revolution in its swing, and one day he meets young Henry Silver, a persistent and curious folklorist and a son of a “practical folklorist” mother, and a tentative friendship with the undertones of subtle and cautious romance eventually follows. It's not very often that I read a story and a wild desire grips me to walk into the woods, to walk and walk and walk until I find someplace quiet and silent and still where all the world can disappear, and my misery can be turned into smoke, like dawn fog wicked away by the sun.

Silver in the Wood - Goodreads

And natural is of course not the same as light – the villain, when we meet him, is quite terrifying, both a part of the woods and an unnatural thing, bright and beautiful and horrifying. He often intimidated people, being a big and grim-looking sort of fellow; he’d accepted it years ago and had long since stopped trying to be the kind of man who smiled enough to make up for it.It poured around him thick and steady, binding all together: the long patient strength of the trees that anchored, the deep bright power of the handful of dryads – Tobias felt Bramble clear as day among them, young and strong – and then the small and necessary, bracken and ferns, the mosses and mushrooms. Apparently it is a duology, and I’m curious to see what the second part brings - new adventures, or the look into Tobias’ past, or maybe fill in the Silver-less year.

But then Greenhollow Hall gains a eccentric landlord, eager to learn about the odd man who lives in the woods. One day, Henry receives a letter from his mother; she is investigating the disappearance of Maud Lindherst, who has been kidnapped by a vampire. There was something not quite real about the experience of reading Silver in the Woods, something almost like a dream.
