About this deal

Third party lenses get the first party treatment for in camera corrections of things like distortion, vignette, etc….

The Fujinon also boasts an impressive 15cm close focus distance, 10cm closer than the Sigma, although how useful this is with a wide-angle lens will be entirely up to the photographer. The 16mm lens corresponds to a classic wide angle of 24mm, and with an extremely large maximum aperture to boot. The longest of the three, this 56mm lens has an ‘effective’ focal length of 90mm, coupled with a fast f/1. In April 2023, Sigma announced it would be making three of its “Contemporary” prime lenses available for the Nikon Z mount – the first Sigma lenses to do this.

Stopping down to f/2 or smaller essentially eliminates the issues, and, as a result, there is a big difference between f/1. It's not impossible to deal with this during post-processing, but left unchecked, it can be very distracting in certain shooting situations. I don’t consider this lens a top choice for astro, but I made a few images with it that night that I like a lot, so won’t hesitate to use it in that fashion in the future. Lens choice therefore should reflect that, and Canon has done a good job with the EF-M lenses that are available.

There are no switches nor any distance markers on the lens due it it having a stepping motor with a “focus by wire” manual focus ring (with such lenses there is no physical coupling to the elements, which renders a standard distance window impossible). Wide-angle lenses with fast aperture ratings can be notoriously big and heavy, quite at odds with slimline mirrorless camera bodies. DC DN | Contemporary features SIGMA’s inner focus technologies, while lighter lens elements in the focus lens group make possible a more compact actuator. These lenses were originally introduced between 2016 and 2018 for Sony E-mount and Micro Four Thirds cameras, and were later made available in both Canon EOS M and Leica L mounts. Now, for mirrorless cameras, SIGMA is developing a range of interchangeable lenses that feature a lightweight, compact package for convenient daily shooting while delivering superior performance and covering the key focal lengths. The corner sharper increases slowly as you stop the lens down, and the optimal aperture for landscapes seems to be around f/5. Image quality is very pleasing, on a par with that of the EF-M 15-45mm and 55-200mm lenses, although the image stabilizer is slightly less effective, rated at 3-stops. The included lens hood can be attached to block out extraneous light, which can have a negative effect on rendering performance.

In particular, the two aspherical lens elements have ultra-high-precision surfaces polished to tolerances under 10 nanometers, minimizing the onion ring bokeh effect that some aspherical elements produce and ensuring clear image quality throughout the frame. In terms of size and weight the lens is a little larger than you may expect, but in real terms it’s nothing when compared to some of the lenses that photographers carry around. These are almost never going to be large enough with this kind focal length to be noticeable, however, so I wouldn’t be too concerned. This is especially true at shorter focus distances and, indeed, the lens has a very short minimum focus distance for a 50mm lens, at just 0. Over the years, SIGMA has built an extensive lineup of bright prime lenses ranging from wide-angle to telephoto. If you need portability and telephoto pulling power, the Micro Four Thirds format is an appealing option. This is a great focal length, in either Super 35 (full APS-C frame – 24mm full frame equivalent) or 30P crop mode (where it frames a little tighter – probably closer to a 30mm full frame equivalent via a roughly 1. Because the star points occupy so little space in a wide angle frame like this, this isn’t overly obvious unless you are looking at a pixel level.

Carrying on from the more mass-market standard and telephoto EF-M zoom lenses, this is the obvious choice for anybody wanting an ultra-wide viewing angle. With the exception of the massive focus ring, the barrel has a sleek black finish contrasted with white text engravings. It also features a ‘hybrid’ image stabilizer, which can correct for x-y shift as well as the more usual angular vibration or wobble. For hiking, I tossed it in my Tenba BYOB 10 (which then gets thrown into my hiking bag), and for short excursions around the city, it fit nicely into my Peak Design sling (with plenty of room to spare). This trio of affordable, ultra-fast prime lenses are of particular interest to Canon APS-C shooters because Canon have released so few native lenses for the EF-M mount - just 8 since the system was launched 8 years ago in 2012, with half of those being slow zoom lenses. The focal length is not so wide that you should get too many weird “polarizing” effects in blue skies. The good news is that the newer DN lenses (16 and 30mm) have been developed with Sony’s newer AF technology in mind. It isn’t quite as precise as direct manual focus, though, as thus makes focusing on the stars a little more challenging.
