About this deal

Again, the small attention to detail here from Philips is more than admirable, it’s outright amazing that they would adjust and improve the fit. The somewhat-tacky Left/Right white text indicators on the cup grills are gone and they have been replaced with an all-black design that features a very thin, bronze ring around the grill’s perimeter. com helping YOU make sound decisions, leading to a beautiful audio experience that will make you fall in love with music . I also found the upper midrange, at around 3K, to be just a little bit forward or shouty to me, although not quite as much as on other headphones, like the HD 58X, HD 600, or HD 650. The fit is snugger like a bug in a rug this time, and even despite the cups being smaller in both length and width, there is still ample room for my big Dumbo-sized ears inside.

Philips SHP9500 vs. 9600 | THIS is an upgrade?! Philips SHP9500 vs. 9600 | THIS is an upgrade?!

Mid-bass doesn't bleed at all into it, which it does in the HD 650, so naturally the mids sound less congested than the HD 650.I was able to turn on the bass switch on the Fiio to add a comfortable amount of bass without messing up the other frequencies.

Philips SHP9600 Review – A Waste Of Time And Money? Philips SHP9600 Review – A Waste Of Time And Money?

I will be using these for gaming and music production (nothing to fancy, just making some beats with the occasional edm). The 96s, while more balanced out of the box, just like the review above states feels not as open as an open back could be. Note: The 9600 actually weighs a bit more than the 9500 (I included this in the about section on the graphic in the video), but was surprised. The 9600 also comes with a more rugged-looking and feeling snap-on 1/4″ adapter, with a subtle but still noticeable “grip” towards the bottom. They are no longer "F" headphones, but I don't know exactly which drivers they put in there since they have had many revisions over the years. The bass has a medium impact, from my memory, the bass has notably more presence than the SHP9500 which sounded bass shy to me, but less bass presence than the Fidelio X2. I personally wanted an lower cost bassier headphone for EDM etc my other open backs are more neutral. The DragonFly Red is a bit more expensive, but I talk about why its DAC chip is superior to many others here. Nonetheless, that midbass boost was very narrow, so thankfully there was still a clean transition from the upper-bass into the lower mids, and the bass overall did not feel overly aggressive in relation to the rest of the frequency response.

It’s useful when you want to listen to music but also be aware of what’s happening around you, for example when you’re jogging but still want to be able to hear traffic. The mids are scooped, but I think the soundstage is such that it doesn't feel too distant, but I do notice that I have to turn up the music a bit louder to appreciate the mids. For the listening tests I used music from a wide variety of genres including Rock, Jazz, Classical, Acoustic, Hip-Hop, and latin.I think this was Philips’ answer to the 58X, but that headphone is much better ( read: better tuned) even despite its Soundstage not being quite as good as either the 9500 or 9600 – both of which are rather excellent. Compared to another budget monster, the AKG K371 I think these are more detailed and soundstage is better, with the expense of bass. If I didn't have the HD 650 for my regular drivers, I'd have no problem using these for that purpose. The 560S is just as comfortable and based on literally the exact same design as the 598 and 599 lol.

Philips SHP9500S vs Philips SHP9600: What is the difference? Philips SHP9500S vs Philips SHP9600: What is the difference?

You will notice the grille on the 9600 is a tad smaller, perhaps reducing a bit of air that was present in the 9500, making it a bit less of a “fully open” headphone. For imaging, I find that the SHP9600 is very capable when it comes to conveying a sense of positioning and directionality. Both headphones are incredibly comfy, but I feel more secure with a 9600 on my head if that makes sense.

Some people with top-of-the-line gear may not notice a difference after purchasing an Amp/DAC, and others may.
