Released on August 5, 1966, Revolver spent seven weeks at number one on the UK albums chart, and a double A-side single with “Eleanor Rigby” and “Yellow Submarine” topped the UK singles chart for four weeks in August and September. Particularly, on most tracks, Ringo’s drums are relegated to one speaker with guitars and effects similarly hard-panned to one channel or the other. The Beatles’ career has been so exhaustively documented, chronicled and bootlegged, it can feel as if there aren’t many surprises left to uncover.

There have only been one or two instances where I would have preferred certain vocals pushed back a little bit, mix-wise, but in general, I’m not complaining. Overdubs included an additional harmony vocal by Paul, omitted from the released version but now faded up in a mix of Take 7.

Instead, his approach involves amplifying the existing nuances of the music from a contemporary perspective, meaning even familiar songs sound fresher. Here, There And Everywhere” sounds incredibly gorgeous, and the minuet-esque “For No One” feels richer than any version I’ve ever heard. Part of that was life experiences seeping into their art after a whirlwind few years: 1965’s Rubber Soul – the studio album directly before Revolver – contained forays into psychedelic pop as well as sharply observed (if straightforward) original songwriting. The Beatles were determined to make a very different recording than they had in the past, and the Fab Four certainly accomplished it with Revolver.

The younger Martin wisely doesn’t calibrate the records for 21st-century ears by adding modern polish and trickery. The editions include a five-CD or four-LP/one 7-inch-EP super deluxe set, containing the half-speed remastered original album in both stereo and mono, demos and sessions, the EP, and a 100-page book; a deluxe edition, featuring an abridged 40-page book, the new stereo mix, session highlights, and stereo mixes of the singles; and standard digital, CD, and vinyl releases.

Announcing Revolver Special Editions | The Beatles

I’m Only Sleeping”, “And Your Bird Can Sing”, and “Doctor Robert” had been previously plucked from the sessions for Capitol’s North American release of the Yesterday And Today compilation album in June. Taken with the whole of Revolver, the short three-year span between these songs illuminates the band’s astonishing creative progression. All formats offer a new stereo mix by Giles Martin and Sam Okell, sourced “directly from the original four-track master tapes” and utilising Peter Jackson’s WingNut Films’ cutting edge ‘de-mixing’ technology, which allows the separation of music previously ‘bounced down’ and fused together on one track.

Revolver’s Special Edition also features Take 11, with falsetto backing vocals by John and Paul with different words from the released version. The reissue of The Beatles’ 1966 album Revolver has been officially confirmed and is coming in late October. Annie Zaleski of The Guardian gave the album five out of five stars, writing: " Revolver 's new details tease out deeper meanings in the songs. He worked with Peter Jackson’s audio team on “de-mixing” the original tapes, using cutting-edge technology to isolate the individual instrumental parts. Once appeared in a Cure video dressed as a cowboy, and thinks any situation can be improved by the introduction of cats.
