He claims to be her father and tells her that he served time in prison for marrying Sally bigamously. Não me apeteceu largar o livro nem por um minuto, queria sempre perceber o que ia acontecer com Mary a seguir. On the whole a good read, at times it was almost a relaxing read ( at other times,see below,it was the opposite ) based around about a woman’s quest to find out the truth about her Mum (who once died was found to have secrets a plenty ) and her Dad ( still alive ), the book was told by the daughter and also back in time by the Mum, both sides of the story fused well throughout the book, I think I favoured the Mum’s as she had had quite the past and many a tale to tell! I did think, why was quite a lot revealed about Alice and her situation when Angus arrives but then over the course of the book I realised that there were many layers to Alice and you really have to sit back and just let the story unfold.After stealing a silk hat, she's caught and sentenced to hang, but then she gets chosen for transport to a new penal colony in New South Wales for seven years. I would recommend this book to everyone, especially if you have a love of history and like me can't resist an incredible story. Sally avoided any questions regarding her life before her daughters were born which had always aroused curiosity in Alice but her mother was unrelenting in that she declined to answer questions.

For me, who have read quite a bit about the theme, both in the more distant and the more recent past, it really didn't matter. A true highlight for me was Sally, a very intriguing character, leading a very colourful life, I could have easily read a whole book on just her and what happened.No matter what she found out, she always seemed to be able to keep calm and understand things from her mother’s perspective. With so much competition for jobs and no recommendation after refusing the advances of her previous employer, Mary is forced into thievery. It is hard hitting at times, some of the things Mary either sees or endures makes for uncomfortable reading. Alice agrees to meet Angus the following day, and here she discovers more about him and his bigamous marriage to her mother.
